We were a Ron Stone-Doug Johnson house growing up but Dave was an OG newscaster for sure. Hard news, hard drinkin
What a legend. He lived a good life.
Having a drink in his honor, in his favorite zip code. Would swing by Kay's if I could.
Back in the 90s, the First Baptist Church in Huntsville was celebrating their 100th anniversary. Having grown up in Huntsville and attending the church, he was one of the keynote speakers the day of the big event.
I was a kid, and I remember being in awe of seeing him IRL.

I consider myself lucky. I grew up with Dave Ward at 13, Ron Stone at 2, and Steve Smith at 11. I'm not sure any city ever had three better anchors. I was a ABC guy for the most part but loved them all.
Sure wish Kay's was still here. I would for sure grab his seat at the corner of the bar and partake in some cocktails.

I've looked for "Ron Stone does the weather" on YouTube but never found it. It was hilarious one night when Ron had to cover weather because no weather man showed up. It went a little askew.

I met Dave a couple times at Crime Stoppers events. Their building is named after Dave and has a nice tribute wall in the lobby.

I am honored that Laura has asked me to be a pallbearer on Friday for the send-off of my old friend and journalism partner in crime, Dave Ward. I knew that wouldn't go unnoticed here.
I started going to Kay's a few years before they closed so I missed the glory years. But I cant imagine how awesome it must have been to go on a random Tuesday night and see Dave Ward, Dolcefino, and Rudy T just tearing it up lol.
I went there plenty. On random weeknights they had channel 13 news in the tv behind the bar. About five minutes after Dave signed off on air, the bartender would crack open a beer and put it at the corner stool. Just a few minutes later Dave would come through the door and take up residence.
