Looking for recommendations in Houston to get a custom or semi custom suit. I'm an old short guy that's hard to fit. Off the rack suit require a lot of alteration and never seem to really fit right. Not really excited about spending the $$ for a full custom suit, but will if needed.

Any recommendations appreciated

Suitsupply always does right by me. I'm average height but I have weird proportions (short arms, long torso, stubby legs). Off the rack does not fit me well either.

I used to go to Aivy there but she got promoted and doesn't do individual consultations anymore. Tirrel is pretty good as well. I have four suits and a tux from them.

Suit Supply is anywhere from $600 to $1000 for a tailored suit off the rack to thousands for a fully custom suit.

I'm a tall guy, so nothing off the rack really works.

I've had really good luck with made to measure suits and shirts.

For the price point, I like Hockerty.com. The best suit I have is from BlackLapel but obviously costs more.

Order the free fabric samples so you know what you are getting.

You will still need to have final tailoring done in person, but you can submit that to be covered up to a certain point If it needs to be extensively tailored, you just have it remade correctly from the place you bought it. I've had one blazer that was just too far off but more often than not I don't even need a tweak from the tailor or just very minor.

I just got an email:

Quote:

Just a quick note from my side I've got a trip to Houston coming up. I'll be in town from Sunday November the 2nd through Friday November 7th.

Additionally, If you can think of anyone in your circle who might benefit from my tailoring services, I would be so grateful for an introduction. My schedule has some flexibility and I'd love to meet potential new connections.

I'm sure a lot of you got that one, too, but if anyone needs his contact info, I can pass it along.

I know there is a lot of love here for Bobby G. I've used him twice and quality/value was never there compared to other options, in my opinion. I'm probably the minority here, he gets high praise.

For OP, what you are looking for here is made to measure (MTM). Custom usually means multiple fittings and working direct with a craftsman. MTM is a middle ground that allows you to pick options and size, and machine made to your specs. There are a lot of budget MTM outfits that cut corners and sell you an inferior product for a premium price.

I'm tall and struggle with options and do a lot of MTM. It's a Pandora's box once you open, and it's easy to get wrapped up in all the options. I have been disappointed on many occasions. It's an expensive journey and no return policy. Consider it an education and once you get your sizing and styling dialed in, it's hard to go back.

For your first time, I'd go with Suit Supply. They use quality fabrics and buttons. It's a little pricey but their product is a good value. They excel on details that others fail (in my opinion) lapel width and shoulder construction. There is value in having someone do your measurements.

Never order without being able to handle the swatch/cloth and confirm the color and quality. I would not purchase from a place I could not handle a sample. Look for fusing (look it up) a mark of lower quality. Also handle the shoulders, the shoulder construction will often drive the style.

Have fun!

Suitsupply might take too long. They have usually delivered my suits in 2-3 weeks. You'll be cutting it close.

I always get their MTM suits. They could possibly tailor something off the rack for you if it works.

Bad experience with Bobby x2 and refuse to go back. Nice guy and great communicator, but all the pants are nut huggers and calves so tight you can't wear boots. Mentioned it for 2nd try and the same damn thing.

Shirts are ok but nothing special.

Also never got comfortable going up to a hotel room to do business and get measured. Felt hookerish

Good experience with Hockerty? Online reviews don't sound great, but that's not always a good indicator.

Off the rack with minor tailoring fit me well, so I don't need anything crazy. Just looking for a well made suit that I can take to my local tailor for a final fit.

I only saw him once, and I know what you mean. Also, my work has gotten so casual that I really don't need any more suits for work.

Q Clothier in West Ave close to Suit Supply. Pricey but a lot of price points. Ask for Tony.
