I nominate Liberty Road as the worst, least scenic (non-traffic related) roadway in Houston. Let's take a tour.
Start at Hwy 59 and move east. I'm not sure if the first stretch gets regular city trash pick-up. This is the nice part of Liberty Road. Further east you pass boarded up homes on one side and a giant railroad switchyard on the other side. This is the location of an underground creosote and dioxin site, considered a cancer cluster. Not fun.
But the road itself is a disaster. Drive carefully there are enormous potholes filled with excess rainwater. No curbs, gutters or storm drains (or road repairs) here.
Approaching 610 and behind a forlorn fence lies a giant pile of busted-up concrete, dirt and whatever else is in there and somehow trees are growing out of it. Like nature herself is trying her best to reclaim the region.
Outside 610 you're hoping for no vehicle breakdowns, although there are plenty of spare tires discarded in the side ditches. Take a right at the fork in the road to stay on Liberty and cross the mud-filled railroad crossing. After that, you can take a hard right down a muddy and dreadful dead-end. Better to bear left as the road narrows, lined with weeds and scrub brush.
At the end, take a hairpin right turn (go slow, the potholes are huge) onto McCarty heading south and back toward civilization. It says something when it's McCarty that leads to civilization.
Liberty Road will not be on any tourist recommendations for the upcoming World Cup matches. Take a tour and report back. Any other roads compete with Liberty Road for least scenic in Houston?
