8th Wonder will be done if/when the THC bill goes through. Unless Abbott vetoes, they are facing a death sentence. Likely effective September.

What bill is this? I don't pay attention. At my job, they still fire stoners.

Texas congress passed a bill banning all hemp based THC products which is how we currently have CBD seltzers and products in Texas. The bill is sitting on Abbott's desk at the moment waiting to be signed or vetoed.

8th Wonder got bought by one of the local THC/CBD companies a few years ago and those CBD drinks at the brewery are the one thing that separate them from other breweries in town.

Thanks. I had no idea why I was seeing this explosion of cocktails with weed in them. Like I said, I never paid attention because I can't afford a $2M pee.

Not weed, THC from hemp so you'll pass a drug test. Not nearly as potent, but they put me to sleep.

Whoops glad I haven't ever been tested.

Update on Talyard since we discussed it in detail last year.

Went on a Saturday night a couple of weekends ago. Arrived just as the Space Cowboys fans were headed to the game next door.

Place was still packed even after they cleared out. Tons of people. Lots of kids running amok. Pickleball courts had a wait list.

Menu has improved a lot. Food was good. Still not a huge fan of their beer.

Operations wise, they're still a bit of a work in progress. The kids lining up for soft drink refills take up way too much staff time and space. It's ridiculous to have to wait in a long line to place a $75 food/beer order behind 15 sweaty little brats who each want a different kind of soda.

At one point they had a separate line for refills but they've ended that. It's time to bring it back, especially on weekends.

They have staff with tablets coming around to tables but that's really just for beer orders. So the order and pickup counters are a mess with lots of line cutting and the inevitable clueless people who block everyone while they ask a million questions or have special demands.

tl/dr: Talyard appears to be doing bang-up business but operations is still a challenge .. i.e. "no one goes there anymore because it's too crowded."

Big Owl? Last day today.

Others I have heard "anticipate to be done by year end" are True Anomaly and Equal Parts.

I thought True Anomaly was just moving locations since their current spot will have the new 59/45 highway on top of it?

Equal Parts better not close. They make awesome stuff and the beer-room bar space is terrific

True anomaly just had a booth at GABF a couple weeks ago.

Like others said, True Anomaly is moving but they still seem to draw a crowd so I'd be shocked they throw in the towel unless the moving costs eat into whatever nest egg they have or they feel new spot they have identified just wont draw the same traffic.

I finally visited Equal Parts last month and the place was full and they seem to have established themselves as the neighborhood watering hole. That'd be disappointing to see them go.

Another round of shutdowns. North Shepard Brewery is closing and was bought by the owner of Farmboy Homebrew shop. He's going to reopen as Farmboy Brewery, have a full liquor license and the back area (i think) will have the homebrew shop. Mid December-ish.

True Anomaly was going to move to a building they bought but the city screwed them on relocation assistance from the 45 expansion project. Sounds like theyre SOL and will be closing.

That sucks about True Anomaly if true, really enjoyed stopping by there whenever I was home, good beer.

The others have had issues or have known major problems.

The industry demand is down as a whole and margins are terrible given tariffs on metals and increase in supply cost. Add in they are not only running their brewery but have to float Brash, which hasn't really come back as popularly as it had been, I could see it. Buddy who told me picks up used grain from these places to feed his cows, so he talks with the brewers and such. Who knows, but he's been right so far.

Beer adjacent, but Houston Cider Co. (formerly Town in City Brewing) on Cavalcade will be closing Nov 16th. Kind of surprised they lasted a long as they did.

Fun times there as a founding member of the Townie Club back when they brewed beer. Jesus, that was like 10 years ago.
