I'm looking to start doing some research on Cub Scout Packs/Boy Scout Troops in BCS and surrounding area (specifically Franklin, but I don't see anything there) for my oldest son. He's still about a year out.

I had an awesome and extremely active group from 2nd grade through high school and want to find a similar experience for my boys.

What are the options around here, and what are everyone's experiences?

Yeah, I need to look into that too. Lots of changes to Scouts since I was in that I don't agree with. Thanks for the link.

First, good for you for wanting to get your son involved. The clock is ticking and we only have so much time to spend with our boys (and girls). Scouting was a great experience for me as a boy and for my son. He went on to be a leader in the Corps of Cadets and is now a 2LT in the US Army, and I can directly attribute his success along the way to experiences he had in Scouting.

You're right, there have been a lot of changes however I firmly believe it is still a very worthwhile organization (especially in light of some of the recent roll backs to the program nationally). Most important is to find a Pack/Troop that is a good fit for you and your son.

When he bridges from Cubs to Scouts there is an event called "Webelos Woods" where all the Troops in the district have a weekend camp-out at Camp Arrowmoon and you get to go around and visit all the Troops. I strongly recommend that and also actually visiting a few Troop meetings to when you get to that point.

Here are a couple other recent threads with lots of other good information:

I have zero experience with Trail Life but have heard nothing but good things about them, so would encourage you to check them out as well.

And to restate something you'll read several times on the threads above, especially as a former Scout, please get involved in Pack/Troop leadership. I hope you find it as rewarding as I did.

I am Troopmaster for Trail Life TX-1525. We meet every Tuesday at 6:30 p.m. at Central Church during the school year. We are starting our 9th year and our program averages 100 boys from 5 years of age to college age. I am happy to talk to you more about Trail Life.

Thanks for the post. I am an Eagle myself and will definitely be involved in the leadership.

I am just getting my eldest son in Cub Scout pack 1069 out of pebble creek elementary; I think that may be a little far from Franklin but we would be happy to have you. I am just getting started in leadership there.

I think a lot of the scouting threads have been consistent on "you get out what you put in" so finding a pack or troop that puts in the effort is key.
