We hit the Tomball location (249x99) pretty regularly, and the manager asked us 2 weeks ago if we were excited about the CS location so I assume it's still a go. AI tells me August start open early 27

I can't give too many answers, but I have 100% certainty that the new CEO killed all single store markets.
The lot looks better than it did when the old Rice Garden was collapsing on itself.

Most brands see Bryan/College Station as a tertiary market. Very few lump BCS in with Houston despite the fact that BCS is closer to Houston than some parts of Houston.
Brands generally want to see a minimum of 2, but more likely 3 locations in a tertiary market to justify the overhead of having a district manager in market.

Super unhappy with this update. Was all set for a Chicago dog, a combo and an Italian beef. All at once.

From their earnings call "The 2027 development pipeline is being reassessed, with expected openings reduced to a range of 4 to 6 units to ensure higher quality site selection and better returns."
They opened one in Richmond and then one in Katy.
Initially, they stuck w/ the traditional menu except they didn't offer the combo(italian beef and sausage).
They did add the combo sometime later. Thinking people in Richmond didn't really get it and they added burgers and a chicken sandwich. Also, they changed the italian beef terminology to "Portillo's Way" meaning wet. Dunked is still used.
When they opened in The Colony, it was packed for several months. Richmond hasn't proven that popular and the Katy location opened about a year later and has probably cannibalized some of the Richmond business. BP has a bunch of Chicago transplants and their building is just down the road from the Katy location.

Maybe we can bring back DatDog instead.
Went to the Tomball location a month or so after opening....no ketchup, out of sodas at the fountain, out of napkins. Yes, reported to the counter. Overall a bad experience, and overpriced.
I live near a couple of Portillos. They're not good. Just saves them closing down.

Yes Portillo's is big publicly traded company. Quality and service are not top of the list.
Interesting. I haven't been to the Texas locations. The quality and service of the ones I'm used to in Chicago are on par with or better than the modal BCS restaurant of any type.
I will concede there are far better dogs and Italian beef in Chicago than Portillos but fat chance of getting anything even close to that here, alas.

they expanded way too fast. Still can't figure out why they built one at Willowbrook and Tomball.

While Portillo's is famous for their hot dogs, I just don't get it. You can get a decent dog at DQ.
You can't get the Italian Beef w/ hot peppers and au jus that IMHO they are most famous for...
Bill Miller owned the Taco Cabana lot. They bought the Rice Garden, On The Border and all four office buildings at 707 Texas. They might have encouraged Portillo's to go away.
They are also not renewing any leases. Not sure what they're going to build, but it will have a big footprint.

This is the worst news! Being from northern Illinois, I truly have missed Portillo's so much. I was super excited about them coming here.
Who else had never heard of Portillos and thought it was another TexMex place

Weinerschnitzel is the gold standard for drive thru hot dogs. Followed by Hot Dogs, Etc.
Angry Elephant, Chubby's, and Wacked Out Weiner for places without.
