First time poster here on the outdoor board, but feel confident I'd get better responses here than maybe elsewhere. Gonna take the wife and two teenage girls to SPI for about a week around 7/4 weekend. Thought about making a quick day trip over into NP to get a bite and do a little souvenir shopping.

Any recs from personal experience for the best restaurants or shopping? Plan to walk across the bridge in lieu of driving. I tend to be an overly cautious/situationally aware husband/dad, so my preference is high traffic areas and not off the beaten path.

TIA!

Everything you need is on the main road and within the first 3-4 blocks.

El Disco Superstore is on the west side of the street, first block after crossing, and has tons of stuff - everything from liquor to guayaberas, ceramic wear to drugs. It can almost be overwhelming, but it's a great place to start. Pick up a frozen rita at their walk-up bar and shop with beverage in hand.

There's a knock-off purse store a couple of blocks down on the west side of the street which your wife and girls will love.

Galerias is on the east side of the street in the 3rd block and is decent shopping.

I'm an Arturo's fan for food and drink (been going there for 50 years) so that's always my recommendation. Get the original margarita there.

There are plenty of other shops and restaurants all on the main street and within the first 4 blocks. Enjoy the day trip!
People think I'm an idiot or something, because all I do is cut lawns for a living.

Arturo's is hands down the best restaurant you can go to.

Arturo's is usually pretty good and consistent, their baked cabrito is always excellent.

There is a taco place in in NP called El No Que No, buddy of mine took me there a couple of years ago. It was exceptionally good. If you wanna get a great meal for about $6-7us a person, and eat something truly local, try this place. Chuy's and Rene's are also pretty good.

If you are on the Island, and wanna see a some of the local scene try eating at Mariscos DeLa Rosa in Brownsville, it is the US location of a very popular Mex seafood place. It is the best Mexican seafood I have eaten not in Mexico, by far.

Also try Vera's BBQ in Brownsville for real, true, authentic made in the ground barbacoa. Vera's is one of two places that I know of that still does barbacoa in the ground and the only place in TX that can do it legally. Be warned get there early if you want some. Their barbacoa is really good.

We always eat at El Texitas. Don't go past Pinkey's. Don't get drunk. Stay together and have fun. That's all the good advice I have for Progresso.

I grew up at Arturo's every Sunday lunch after church when visiting my grandparents.

FYI, they have a US side restaurant now in Weslaco. We hit it everytime we see grandma.
