I'm having a hard time finding "old school" galvanized farm gates.

I really don't want tube gates. Do they not sell these anymore?

Our Lowe's here in the Ozarks still sells them but they have really become expensive.
I use a galvanized " bull gate" now. Heavy as heck but is round pipe….but holds up better than the old panel gates.
Here is the Lowe's pic.of their panel gates.

ETA: Just FYI…Farmaster used to be the brand name on those panel gates.

Where's "down here"? I'm in East Texas and all I can find is tube gates.

Havnt seen those in years over here in San Antonio. But I have been collecting them from housing developments. When I'm on the road if I see a gate like that in a new housing development that is under construction, I swing in and ask whatever laborer is there if I can take it and they usually say "jess…is ok." Sometimes I have to bust out the "necessitas esto? Puedo tomar?" Or whatever horrible Spanish I have and they don't care.

Whip out my tools, dismount it, and toss it in my bed for later use. Eventually they destroy them and toss them when they finish the neighborhood. Lots of these are around and many old farms and ranches have been sold to developers so you can just pick them up.

Believe he is down in the El Campo area. I just called our farm and ranch store here and asked if they had a brand name on them for you. They told me they are not carrying them anymore.
Unless you just like the looks they are actually pretty crappy gates. They catch wind bad, and bend easy if you have anything that pressures them. I totally quit using them cause they all got tore up.
I just hauled three 12 footers to the scrap yard all bent up about two months ago.

I didn't want to say it but they aren't great gates. lol. I agree. They are thin, our cows kick the heck out of them. They bend. But they are ok for free and quick replacement. I do like free.

Yep. They used to be inexpensive for what they were so I bought them back in the late 90's. Our horses would put their hooves on the bottom rail and that would be it....all bent to hell. When I bought the ranch in the Ozarks the old owner had three of them in the pasture. They all looked like some type of pop art as they were all bent up. Those are the ones I just hauled to the scrap yard.

1" round or square tubing with 4x4 welded wire gates will last exponentially longer. Any particular reason for wanting that style gate over the tubing style?

Purely an aesthetic - I just ike the way they look. They remind me of hanging out on the farm with my grandpa.

I realize everything you mention about the tube gates (and thanks). I'll probably have to settle on a galvanized tube gate anyhow. I just heard back from Behlen. They stopped making them about 10 years ago and he wasn't aware of anyone who still made them. He talked about how good the tube gates were as well.

My neighbor lady has a 14' just sitting. It's in good shape. Not bent.
I helped her expand her ranch entrance and hung two 10' gates instead.
It's just up here in north Arkansas.
You can come get it and I'll put you up here at the ranch and feed you good.
I'm sure I can get it from her.

We used to use a similar gate even more old school all the horizontals were wood and the bracing was the galvanized metal. They were great and lasted forever just replace the damaged boards. My guess is they didn't sell many replacement gates can't have that anymore.

I also think they made this gate in a couple different gauges. The light gauge was almost worthless the heavy gauge could take a beating and was still light. Seems like from memory the heavy gauge was a darker color and not as shiny like the one in the picture.

For nostalgia I would build a wooden gate in the same design & paint it silver. Will last longer for sure! I despise those gates.

You didn't say what length you needed, this 16ft is available (cheap), but we're in Brazos county.
I think a couple of 10 or 12 ft are also onsite.

South of Houston along the coast.

As others have said - they really aren't all that great for gates. The tube gates, especially ones made from heavier wall tubing and not the paper thin crap you get from TSC, are way better.

Lifetime was the brand. Popular for years. Don't know if they are even in business.

We have at least 1 15' (?) on our property in Franklin county we might be willing to sell. I've been wanting to replace it with a pipe gate for a while. Definitely not my favorite style of gate.

Nothing more country nostalgic than a lifetime gate with worn out rivets hung too low on a post that's not supported well or rotting where you just drag the gate end on the ground to open and Apache wasps vacate the cavity near your armpit.

Good stuff.

We have one still in use at the entrance to our farm near Kosse. Damn thing drags every time, but I don't care. My dad loved them, and it reminds me of him when I open it. Probably have 3 or 4 more laying around out there. Always a bonus when you find one with rusty hinges still attached. Beats having a barbed wire fence gate like we used to have when I was a kid.

We called those "gaps" and being strong enough to open and close the tight ones was a mark of manhood for a young boy! They've all been replaced with gates now, but find memories for sure.

On a new hill country hunting lease 10 years ago I offered to fix/ replace dragging gates and gate posts. The elderly rancher okayed shimming/ adjusting the hangars/ hinges but didn't want to change out what grandpa had installed 50 years prior. So they are still a pita today.

Lifetime Gate Company, Hwy 317, Temple Texas. They went out of business many years ago, and I used to pass their old location on the way to the ranchito.

As a kid, always eager to be the one to open the gate, and hopefully get to ride it open, before getting yelled at "git off the gate"!
And it seems like the panel gates were always the flimsiest, and sagged. Maybe the way their sliding hinge inserts are made, or the hinge post lacked support.

As an adult, I tried to hang my gates (all tubular) in such a way, an under 50-60 lb kiddo could "ride the gate", without causing a problem. One of rural life's fun opportunities.

Bottom line they were, for many years, the cheapest way to go for a gate. So a lot of them were sold because of that. They were lacking in many ways....that's why the many companies that built them or either out of business or don't make them anymore.
