Hey fellas. If you know me from the hurricane threads I'm the golf cart guy.

We have a house in sea isle and my 4.5 year old has always enjoyed when we went fishing for bass at local ponds and at my family's farm. He just has one of those cheap Spider-Man rod and reels.

I've fished all over the place and been extremely lucky on some of the fishing trips I've been on. Swallowing my pride here but admittedly I know little about salt setups and general knowledge.

Without spending stupid money on myself and toddler, what's a reasonable rod and reel for myself and him? We'll just be fishing off the private pier in the bay. Prefer easiest setups and least hassle. Mainly just want to get him more involved outdoors and get some good bonding in.

Other than the game manual, any good resource for fish types/limits/size etc?

Appreciate any advice.

Go to Academy and get you one of the lite Penn combos.

Size limits….

Zebco spin cast. 202, 404, or 33. You can probably find a combo pack with 2 rod/reel combos together at Walmart or Academy for $50 or so.
I keep several at the farm house for kids and they work great.

Find one of these and hang it in his room.

When I was little we used the exact same tackle salt or fresh until we learned to cast and work lures. We were mostly catching hardheads, pin fish, piggie perch, croakers, and maybe small trout or drum or sheepshead.

I don't think you're likely to catch a lot of toddlers bay fishing.

At that age, there is a kids rod where the line runs inside the blank. Keeps it super simple and no eyelets to mess with. They outgrow it quickly, but good to get them started.
As for tackle, a small weight tied on a over a small hook. Use small pieces of peeled shrimp on the bottom. Keep the line tight and wait for the fish.
Don't forget pliers to shake off any catfish. And there will be plenty.
