It is the early rifle (Sept.) hunt that is restricted to the entire Flat Tops Wilderness area so includes parts of 12, 24, 25, 26, 231, etc.

Have you ever hunted the area?

After 27 years of applying and building preference points, I got lucky today and drew a Shiras bull moose tag near Jackson, Wyoming just east of the Tetons. October can't get here quick enough...

Best of luck to the rest of y'all in the upcoming draws!!!

Assuming thats 18?

If you need an outfitter, I have a friend right there, old school hunter/outfitter type. PM me with your contact info and I can give you his info. He still lives where he grew up in the Gros Ventre.

We are coordinating my daughters Elk with him now and he is asking me to see if she is interested in using a crossbow for elk in September next year. I am an bow and rifle hunter and the crossbow thing just never crossed my mind, always considered them a slow rifle. Anybody still reading this far have any thoughts on crossbow elk hunting? she is 17 not sure how she will respond so already in love with her Alamo Precision Build.

From an experience perspective Id choose crossbow in September over a later rifle hunt every time.

Yessir, WY unit 18, Fish Creek. I'm booked with a local outfitter that has great success on MONSTER Shiras bulls and outstanding bull elk. I'll be heading up there around the first part of October at the start of the moose rut. It should be an adventure with all the wolves and grizz in that country. The moose are real smart in that country with all the wolves and grizz, but they do grow some bigguns out there.

Sorry, but I've got no comments on crossbow hunting. Of all the years I've chased elk, they're tough critters and can absorb a lot of lead. Wishing you and your daughter the best of luck and we're looking forward to you posting some pics!

I'm going to go fight the crowds in unit 62 for Colorado Elk! It'll probably be another backpacking trip with a bow, but it'll still be fun.

Long story short, I had a hunt planned with some friends in November and it's looking like I can no longer go (again, long story). I drew a private land mule deer and cow elk tag for rifle.
I'm new to this, but I've read the emails about five times and they say the deadline for surrendering the tag for points/refund is Monday, 1 June and it also says it's up to 30 days before the season starts, which would give me a few more months to make a decision.

I def don't want to lose hope/give up yet, but I also don't want to lose $1300 and take a tag someone else could use. Can someone please help a newbie to this?

I could be wrong, but I believe the first deadline is to surrender the tags and keep your preference points used to draw them. The second deadline is to get your money back, but you lose your points.

I somehow managed to draw a CO Bull Moose tag. Unit 161. Beyond stoked for the once in a lifetime tag, lots to figure out....also ended up with a bear and decent 3rd rifle deer tag.

I haven't posted much the last few years, life and kids, but I'll try to post more regarding upcoming moose adventures. Off to buy lotto tickets and earn brownie points with the wife to pay for upcoming away time.

Correct, resident. Drew with 8pts (3+5 weighted). Moose is all a lottery draw with the weighted points and a buncha nerd math. Incredibly lucky.

That's awesome, I am no longer a resident but have like 16 weighed points and still can't seem to draw. Maybe next year!

Does KS count? We drew archery there. So we pushed back our Pronghorn Hunt in WY 1 year amd elk 2 years in WY.

I have a few pp in CO for elk and muledeer. Also Buck in NE and WT in south dakota. Too much to keep up with really not sure how yall do it.

Eating tag soup for the third year in a row on our Idaho Unit 39 Spring Bear hunt. Pretty beat down after over 5k elevation climb and 20+ miles walked over the week.

Going to go further north next year. Determined to kill a spring bear unguided.

Congrats on a great moose tag! A friend of mine from Idaho drew this tag many years ago and killed a really big bull. Best of luck to you and hope you get a biggun!!! I drew a moose tag in western Wyoming this year so I'm on the same cloud nine that you are. Since you're a resident, I hope you'll have plenty of time to do a lot of scouting and find out the creek drainages where moose hang out.

I'm a CO non-res and currently sitting on 23 + 3 points. I just keep throwing my name in the hat and paying my $100 donation every year. Kinda like Aggie football, next year will be my year! LOL!!!

Be sure and post lots of pics of your hunt and bull. It's safe to say, we're all pulling for you. Now, go get in shape for the packout!!!!

A little orientation trip while in the region. Drove 120 miles (60 miles down and back) of the Greys River in the Bridger National Forest. Guide told me to expect 8500'. He wasn't kidding. Majestic country. Can't wait for September. Building myself a 7PRC right now. Will be a game day decision on whether or not it replaces the 7STW.

Outstanding country! Always a great time to be in the mountains during early September, especially chasing muleys and elk. Maybe we'll pass each other on the highway as you're heading home and I'll just be getting there??? I've been hoarding my WY muley max preference points for somewhere in the next 5+/- years. Best of luck on your early muley hunt, it's gonna be an awesome adventure!!!
