Neighbors with bright lights

How long do you want to ignore this user?
Heres the dilemma:

1. My parents got one of those green fishing lights to put on the dock for the grandkids. I never used one but Its my understanding these lights need to be running for a while, a few nights in a row even, for you to benefit from them. Well that brings us to....

2. Control freak neighbor, 100 yards across the pond texts my father asking him to turn the light off, no reason given. They had a similar issue with a different light 25 years ago when the same neighbor first moved in. Neighbor is vehemently against having blinds and/or closing them at night time, which is weird to me but whatever.

Best i can i figure, the issue is just a bright green light (that doesnt even shine directly into the home) that they can see when they look out the window and it messes with their ambiance.

What is the proper response here, or is the best response just no response? Serious and sarcastic replies welcomed.

That is an appropriate question to be solved by the Outdoor Board.

Buy 10 more green lights.
Add a propane cannon.
Fly a flag ( illuminated) 7/24 that signals your response.

You have to tear your own fence down in protest. This is like common knowledge.

I hate people that are afraid of the dark and have floods and flashing crap. I say screw any neighbors that have lights and floods and definitely flashing lights. If it were up to me, I'd require night sky compliant lighting everywhere and anything that was excessive would come with a Karen Gestapo style search every night with 5,000 dollar fines for infractions. Lol.

I don't know what the deal is with people and night lighting but it's one of my soapbox pet peeves.

I'm on the side of the neighbor in the "turn that **** off" camp. BUT….For the particular OP, if this is a few days at a time thing, then I think that would be acceptable. I think leaving it on forever is a dick move but having it on occasionally could be worked with. A few days prior to use and then off seems reasonable.

You have to see it from the other end. Not everyone wants to hibernate in their house with the shades drawn like a recluse. Maybe he likes being outside? Maybe he just wants to enjoy his place without flashing lights 100 yards away. It's not that far.

I have not heard of the need to have it on multiple nights to be effective. We used to use one in saltwater and it rarely took more than an hour or two to attract a school of baitfish. Maybe put a timer on it and run it for a few hours after dusk each night, but not all night long?

Put it on a timer to go off at 10pm. If you're out there fishing you can leave it on and they can deal with it. It doesn't have to stay on all night to work.

"Nuts" is appropriate response. I've had them before and neighbors has one now. They are not very bright out of water, you don't notice this one on unless you look directly in water.

They could also convert it to an underwater light. It wouldn't reflect towards their neighbors house, but still attract fish.

I'm with this guy. If you're not outside at night turn off your porch lights, outdoor lights illuminating the entire backyard, and for the love of everything holy the upward facing lights on the house facade.

Yep. I'm on the side of ole Brazos Dog here. My dad was a LEO for almost 4 decades. He used to say that folks that have outside lights on all night like mercury vapor or floods, are just making light for the burglars and thieves to see what they are doing better.

True story here.: About 8 years ago a wanted guy for multiple murders was on the lose in Kimble County. He had ran from a KC deputy Sheriff about 11:00 pm. and exited off IH10 at the Segovia exit…..ran his car off into a fence a broke and ran into the brush.
He evaded capture for almost three days by staying hidden in that typical hill country ranch terrain. Most of the ranches in that area were larger acreages. He laid up during the day and traveled at night.
When captured he told the Cheif Deputy of KC that he found hunting cabins and uninhabited homes/buildings
by finding high hills at night and searched for the security lights or flood lights that were on. He said it showed him exactly where to head to hangout and steal provisions, firearms and vehicles.

"Security" floodlights in areas like that are like a submarine driving around using its active sonar. The distance at which the light/sonar is useful to detect anything is way shorter than the distance at which the light/sonar can be used by an enemy to pinpoint where you are.

Here was the real sobering thing to us:
The Sheriff made him go with them and they wanted him to give them the paths and places he went to to see if he hurt anyone or stole firearms etc.
Now, at our house I never kept on any house lights or outdoor lights once we went bed. So our house was always pitch black.
The sheriff told us that he said he had walked the creek bottom below our house and went right by us as he did not see the house up on the hill.
He told him that if we had had a light on he would have come to our house and broke in.
So, due to that, we never leave lights on outside or inside after we go to sleep.

I understand this in a lot of places, but living in bear country, I'm in favor of motion lights.

and what would you say if i told you that the control freak has those flood lights, string lights, landscaping lights in trees? My parents have never complained though, in part due to closing blinds at night for privacy but also as not to make a mountain out of a molehill like this ass hole does about every issue. And my folks just really don't care cause property rights goes both ways.

Im in total agreement about the all the outrageous flood lights on rural properties which caused some trepidation to even put this light up to begin with. However, it does at least have a clearly defined, and demonstrably constructive purpose.

to each their own, but when you cant hardly see out the window at night, all youre really doing is just exposing yourself in a not too dissimilar way that the floods expose your property to riffraff, like in gunny's story.

I understand this in a lot of places, but living in near country, I'm in favor of motion lights.

You would be better off with a motion activated camera like an Arlo or a Nest with infrared LEDs. They light up what is moving for you to see, without tipping them off they have been spotted.

At the end of the day this dude is looking for things to complain about so it may not matter what you do, but does the light have a baffle on it? Maybe put it as close to the water as possible and have a baffle or something so he cant see the actual bulb from his house. That plus maybe not running it till much later will reduce his ability to complain so much about it. Sounds like he's just a grump who likes yelling at people though.

Agree with above. If your light is visible across the lake, it isn't doing you any good. Figure out a way to put it under water, or shield that side of the light.

And put me on the anti-light side. Up here on the plains, you can see lights for 15 miles. One new neighbor (featured on "House Hunters") has a riding arena with lights on every night 7/365

A trailer manufacturer 8 miles away, has security lights that I can read by on my farm.

Me, I have an unlit barn 1/2 mile off the pavement that no one knows is there.

And wife recently retired, so we are putting a lot of miles on the RV. Probably 50% of folks with trailers string lights around them. Like 30 incandescent bulbs strung through the trees, or multiple Christmas light strands.

Why are people afraid of the dark?

Cause usually it's city folk moved to the country or traveling in their motor homes or trailers. Ever see a city that ain't lit up? Heck no. They have been indoctrinated to need all the lights on.

At my place in Encinal we have a bunch of "exchange student " traffic. As stated, when these groups come through and it has slowed down, but they are looking for an easier way north. Water food, and vehicles are on their minds. Used to be windmills and towers were their landmarks but with electronics I guess they don't need those things. Still as stated, lights attract bad guys out in the country.
Now another problem I have is a city boy neighbor worth too much money. When he squeezed out his partners for the ranch he installed a full blown stadium light on a tall stadium like pole. It really trashed the sky at night.
I really wish these city folks would stay home, they are ruining things for the rest of us.

A compounding factor with dock lights is the reflection. I know the OP said it doesn't shine directly at their home - which is obvious since it's purpose is to attract fish - but when you are across the bay, pond, or lake it is surprising how the reflection actually amplifies the light. 100 yards isn't that far.

I am w/ texag92 in that I don't believe there is any duration necessary to attract the fish. I've spent the night on the ICW in a shack and turn on the light - here come the fish. My suggestion would be to strike a compromise.

I would say turn it on a bit before they want to fish and then turn it off when finished. If neighbor wants to complain then confront them about there landscaping and mood lights.

The perfect application for a Gamo whisperer or a suppressed .22. He will eventually get tired of replacing the lights and give up.

It would take a long range rifle, the said lights are a 1/2 mile from our campfire. But it's still not dark.
