Dynovite type of supplements.

Do they work or are they just snake oil? Anybody use it, or a comparable product?

Our little dog has been chewing the top of her paws lately. She also itches more than normal IMO. (Basic mutt that was dumped in the neighborhood that we rescued). Could be separation anxiety as she is absolutely attached to everybody, but also could potentially be some allergy issues, etc. I don't want to take her to the vet and am wondering if these types of supplements work or not.

We tried the Winpro allergy supplements for a few months and did not see any changes. Now I'm on my second jar of "Dog is Human" and I've not seen any changes with that yet either. I'm also a bit irritated because in all of the advertising they have people giving testimonials about how their dogs felt better in 2 to 3 weeks but when you get the actual product there's a huge notice that says please use for at least 3 to 5 months to see results. Well at $30 a month that's an awful expensive trial.

Our boy is really itchy and we have also done the Apoquel and recently the Cytopoint injections. The Apoquel works great but they are coming out with research showing that long-term use has side effects some of which we seem to be seeing. The Cyto works too, but it's $200 a month.

We're pretty frustrated and would love advice if anybody has any. On another note if your puppy shopping, make sure to ask if there are any allergies in the bloodline and steer clear if there are.

I have no personal experience, but the way Michael Berry is pimping the Ruff Greens, I am in for the comments....

Good post. We have a four year old lab that has terrible allergies … also constant reoccurring ear infections for no reasons. We have gone to vets and tried everything…I mean lots of dollars spent and literally everything. He has been having this since being 6 months old. Allergies, topical fungal infections, skin issues, ear infections, etc.
We have had allergy test run etc etc.
Apoguel works somewhat but eventual side effects. We have tried allergy shots to no avail as well.
We now give him Zenrelia Tablets, which has worked the best so far…however he has to come off of it every so often for side effects minimization.
We tried changing diets and foods also.
It's a beitch for him and us.

What side effects are making you stop these medications?

None that we have seen yet….but our two vets have told us there is long term adverse effects of Apoquel.
On the Zenrelia they have told us he has to come off of it for a period of time then can get back on it and so forth.
The Zenrelia has, so far, given us the best results.

It seems they want the dog to be off the Zenrelia for 30 days before and after any vaccinations since it suppresses the immune system - that sounds like a pain. There is no such requirement for Apoquel that I know of. Also since Zenrelia is relatively new there are no long-term studies on long-term use. I'm curious why your vet recommended it over the Apoquel - I do see you said that it worked better for your guy.

Because Apoguel really didn't help much. They said they felt Zenralia would be better and have less side effects than Apoquel. Two vets have told us the same.

Thanks, I will ask my vet.

We tried a lot of the supplements, food changes, topical shampoos, and then cytopoint injections. None of it worked for our itchy dog.

Then we tried apoquel. It has been a total game changer for our pup. No more itchiness and total improvement in quality of life. He still gets the occasional ear infection, but life is so much better…except for my wallet. That stuff is not cheap.

Wish it worked for our guy.

Our vet said ear infections could be caused by an allergic reaction. The dog's allergy test showed chicken as a trigger. One night the pup snuck a chicken tamale off the kitchen island, next day he had an ear infection.

He is on apoquel and hydrolyzed protein food but I think I'm wasting money.

Cyto is $200/mo for my 93 lb Lab. Apoquel is $73 autoship from Chewy. I just worry about the long-term side effects.

We have a lab that has all the same issues as Gunny's. We have tried everything- supplements, cutting out chicken, trying different foods, etc. Apoquel did not work for her. Finally got her on the Cytopoint shots and that has helped tremendously. We can tell when it is starting to wear off and she starts chewing on her feet and if we wait a few days too long for the next shot she usually gets an ear infection. other labs we had did fine with Apoquel. I think it is just trial and error until you find what works for your dog. For our dog, the allergy and infection issues also seem to be aggravated by being wet. She loves water and we live in SE AK so avoiding it is not an option. Using an ear rinse to dry out her ears helps with preventing the ear infections when she is in the water a lot.

BTW when using immunosuppressive drugs I like my patients to be on a drug like Nexgard which helps control Demodex mange mites.

So nobody has really any experience with the add to food nutrition. Gotcha.

I thought Dynovite was a pill? Is it a powder you add to the food? I think that is what the "Ruff Greens" are as well. I do not have experience with either of those.

But as I said above, I tried the Winpro and Dog is Human and have not really seen any changes.

I think most high quality pet foods already have lots of vitamins etc in them so I'm not sure if this isn't all just snake oil. I'd love to know.

It's kind of a shame really, we all want what's best for our pets but does any of this stuff do anything?

It's really sad that so many dogs have itch/allergy issues.

Along these same lines are the high quality pet foods - Sundays, Farmer's Dog etc. My sister feeds their dog Sundays but when I looked at the price tag my jaw hit the floor. Of course from reading their advertising you're practically poisoning your dog if you don't feed them their product instead of standard kibble.

We switched to Farmers Dog and assuredly made his allergies worse. Crazy.

Had a friend who used Dynovite and loved it but after a year she had quit. I guess she didn't think it helped anymore.

Dynovite did nothing for us. This is allergies to Bermuda grass or other. But only gets the allergies when she is playing frisbee due to dragging back feet through grass. Sort of like a person diving into the grass playing football. I get a rash on the spot . we use cytopoint which helps some and gentamicin spray on her paws which helps

My 7 month old lab had terrible itching and scratching. Started on probiotics 2 months ago and has made a world of difference. No itching anymore.

You might like Genesis Topical Spray for contact allergies. It's a water soluble steroid. Gentamicin spray is an antibiotic. But whatever works.

Friend of mine who is a Veterinarian had an English Bull Dog with severe allergies. He tried everything. Finally coincidentally he put his dog on Prescription Diet W/D a high fiber low fat diet and the allergies all went away. Go figure.

Our boy is a prolific frisbee dog too. I am sure that is a big part of it.

I use Pet Ultimates Probiotics for dogs. It's a powder you sprinkle over their food once a day. Must have no taste because he doesn't even know it's there and it really works great for him. I get it at Amazon. $35, a little pricey but worth it to me.
