It sucked in Grayson county this morning. I had 3 Ringnecks buzz my blind at about the speed of sound right after legal shooting light. Later 4 pair of Mallards came in but they went to the far end of the pond to land and hugged the bank for about an hour then hauled ass. I did call some cormorants in with a Canada goose call. They landed right in the middle of my decoys. Was a nice day to be outside though. 34 degrees with a slight breeze.

We shot at one bird and got it (gadwall) this morning. There were some mallards and pintails early before shooting hours.

Otherwise basically nothing.

We finally started seeing some birds the last two weekends between Markham and Midfield.

Fresh birds off the fronts moving through, that dwindle after the first day.

Seven guys shot 19 (BWT, GWT, Gadwalls) on Friday the 2nd. Only got 6 on the 3rd.

Five guys shot 26 (BWT, GWT, Scaup, Shoveler) and 3 geese on Saturday the 10th, only got 5 on the 11th.

For comparison, the "only shot 5" days eclipsed the season total so far.

Launch at Nails Creek and run into the flooded stuff near flag pond if you have a boat. If not, walk in area in the WMA could be productive but havent been back there in 7-8 years

I haven't been over to Nails creek specifically but the lake is very low and reports are flag pond doesn't have much water. Did hear from some guys who had a decent hunt on WMA ponds earlier this season.

Heard flag was completely dry.

Anyone else hunt Somerville mush this year?

Not trying to be an ass, but nobody is going to hotspot a pin they hunt on the internet. Please don't ever do that.

Remember the old days while a student… printing off WMA maps, driving all around the Somerville back roads, walking the WMAs based on creek lines and topo's. If we found birds, sleeping in the truck and hunt the next morning. Google Earth changed scouting.

Go and scout it yourself! they were nice enough to give you the general location and now you want a specific PIN? Nest you're going to ask to hunt somebody's Blind?

Lows on Saturday down to 29! Might break a little ice in the morning, depending on how close to the coast I get.

c'mon guys … no need to jump on a fellow duck hunter and Aggie. It's public land. I would be willing to tell him everything I know, if I knew that area. Good luck Aggie Ranger! Hope you find them and get I to them or at least have a memorable adventure.

The big numbers of wigeon finally showed up for me the last few weeks. Yesterday and today I was covered up. Lots of ring necks and a few gadwall, pintail, and redheads but the wigeon are liking the setup.

The hen in this picture had a white patch like a drake. Unlucky for her and I don't think I have ever seen one with that much color.

That's a great looking string. We got into Widgeons and Ringmecks last weekend in Mason County.

Ringnecks are a pain in the arse to clean, but they eat great.

It always sounds like a good idea, but then you just end up with a mess on your hands.

Leaving rockport got limits of redheads and a few pintails. Not great but saw lots of new ducks coming in this evening from the porch.

Looks like some really cold weather is hitting up north. Just checked Omaha, NE and they will have a low in the single digits the next several days. OKC is getting down into the teens tomorrow. Hopefully we will see a big push of birds over the next few days to close out the season. That obviously doesn't give us a bunch of time, but it is what it is.

I don't know if it's even feasible under federal regulations but trip98 and I and our boys have hunted together for 10+ years now and one of the things we've discussed helping down here is having the season start later and run longer.

Like, instead of having a first split for big ducks, closing for 2 weeks, and then re-opening is to maybe have the season not start until the week of Thanksgiving or maybe even the first weekend after and instead of closing at the end of January'ish maybe run until the middle of February. That gives more time for winter to really set in up north and push the birds farther south to us.

And, I think we (and most hunters) would probably be good with a 4-bird limit instead of 6. I'm also not convinced that a 3-bird limit on pintails is needed in Texas. Out of the big ducks we probably see more pintails south of 10 than anything else except maybe spoonies.

Can't run past Jan 31st. Ducks are already pairing up now. We need them heading back north in the spring.

The science shows most ducks are paired up by mid-January. And re-pairing rates if you kill a mate after mid January is fairly low. If we cared about science informed decisions we would shift the season earlier not later.

But if you think Lousiana is upset about flooded corn up North now, just try to tell a Cajun he can't shoot ducks after mid-January!

Rough crane shoot this morning. 4 birds for 6 guys.

Cover wasn't great, but we made do at irrigation riser and actually had a really good hide once we grassed in. We were right where they were all this week. Birds wanted in, and the number were there for a great hunt but I'm convinced Divebomb silhouette decoys are not as effective as they once were for crane hunting.

I will be investing in 18 full body Deception or SX decoys, my main hunting partner will be doing the same. Already have a little cargo trailer to store it all in during hunting season and pull in to field for setup.

My buddy and I are guessing that cranes are now hunted over skinnies from Canada all the way to Texas and have started to pick the spread apart when they get over the top of it and they disappear when looking at them from above. They are the most widely used deke due to their lower price compared to full bodies. This is just our hypothesis, but we seemed to have much more success with the exact same strategies we have always used before the skinnies were so popular. Limits almost every single time with birds decoying perfectly, they are Leary now. Gotta adapt and change tactics, either way still had a blast with buddies and enjoy it every time, even the bad hunts.

Lots of birds on coastal public today, but they wanted nothing to do with the decoys. Started out with 18 and had whittled it down to four by the end. Probably would have done better with none at all.
