If the river really crests 37 feet at Spring Branch, it will be way way over the highway at the Guadalupe river bridge on 281. The 281 bridge would seem to be in jeopardy.
It won't be over the highway at 281 if it crests at 37 feet. The flood of 1978 crested at 45+ feet and barely went over. The flood of 2002 crested at 44.2 ft and just lapped at the bottom. If you're getting your info from KSAT12 those people have no clue about the Spring Branch area. The weather man Adam Caskey was talking about flooding in our area and said the river will be 10 feet over the bridge and identified an area across 281 from us and just south of the river, The River Crossing sub, and saying if you're in this area you need to think about evacuating because this land slopes toward the river and will easily fill in. The only problem is the land that slopes toward the river is a huge field on the NORTH side of the river, The south bank is a cliff that drops about 50 feet straight down. One of their reporters was on Spring Branch Road and was pointing out a low water crossing and said the water will be over this area sometime tonight. The only problem? The low water crossing was on Spring Branch road but was 3 miles south of the river and about a mile north of HWY46. Then they kept going on SB road and stopped at low water crossing near 281 and showed Spring Branch Creek flowing under the bridge and said before long this will be a roaring stream and unpassable. The problem? Spring Branch creek is a spring fed creek that runs INTO the Guadalupe about a mile south of the low water bridge.
I missed this broadcast, but that's hilarious. We live just off SBR in Rivermont.

For clarification the gauge for Spring Branch is downstream from the 281 Bridge a few miles. That gauge always shows higher than what is actually at the bridge as it is after a few additional creeks dump into the river. They actually measured 51' at Rebecca Creek in 1978 ( miles downstream from the 281 bridge) whereas the Spring Branch gauge measured 45.25.
As you say it will be interesting to see what this flood crest at the Spring Branch gauge.
Prayers for all. Be safe.

I just got back from the Kaffe Klatch meeting and had to cross the river on the 281 bridge to get there. Last night about 9 the river was at it's normal level. I don't know how high it actually got during the night but it's 20 feet below the bridge right now. Our weather folks at KSAT 12 were a little off in their prognostication that it would be 10 feet over the 281 bridge. Yeah supposedly it went up to a 40 something foot rise on the crossing south of Kendalia fairly quickly but the river channel narrows down in that area which makes the water level rise and then opens up more below there which makes the water level fall......I guess they never thought about that occurring......the measuring device data shows a high at 39 ft

Still no news.

They were at HTR in Ingram. Oldest daughter is safe and was at a camp (not Mystic). Dad, Mom and her two younger brothers were camping in an RV and are still missing.

Yeah the "10' over the bridge" just didn't make sense. That would have flooded the whole valley. Hell QT would have been under water.

The crew at KSAT did some of their best work yesterday, on a day they probably weren't planning on working at all. I'm thankful for everything they did and can't imagine fixating on one miscalculation this much

Center Point video, really long and somehow highlighted the power and devastation more than others I've seen. Incredible. From way below the bridge to topping it. House floating at the 35 minute mark.

Prayers for all affected, I hope everyone is found quickly.

It wasn't just one mistake. Caskey made the statement that with the river cresting at 37 feet that would be 10 feet over the previous record of 27ft. Evidently nobody did an internet search that shows the records because they clearly show that it crested at 45 + in 1978 and 44 ft in 2002. He said that the southbound bridge which has the trestle had trees and debris stacked against the metal structure in prior floods and it's never had such. He made the comment about the area across 281 from us to the east and south of the river flooding when there's a 50 foot cliff there down to the river. They never mentioned the narrower channel at the "Bergheim" location verses the wider one below and what the effect of both would be. Then there were the reports of imminent flooding in areas 3 miles away from the river, eminent flooding on a creek that feeds the river when we got 2.10 inches or rain in three days.

The KSAT discussion should be a separate thread anyway.

Imagine that in pitch black at 2 am. Just terrifying, I've tent and rv camped near running water in the hill country, tend to have some type of white noise when sleeping and it makes me rethink that if there is any chance of rain at all. Hard to stop thinking about those missing.

This from Steve Browne, the former KSAT weatherman than Adam Casket took over for. Relevant because there will probably be more flooding downstream of Canyon Lake.

Quote:

Another rain bomb is going off now between SA and Gonzales. This is downstream of Canyon Lake and those on the Guadulupe downstream will experience river flooding. From New Braunfels to Gonzales to Cuero. The clouds making the bomb again are up over 55,000 feet high. Rainfall rates can exceed 4" per hour. Things can change in a hurry.
The physics behind these rain bombs is fascinating to this old chunk of coal. They are obviously difficult to predict and exceptionally dangerous. Computers rain forecasts are pretty useless in these situations which is why the TV mets that rely on them appear hamstrung. Here's what I know to look for.
First, a deep tropical atmosphere that is near saturation from the ground up to over 40,000 feet. That occurs rarely, but often with a tropical system that has come in off the Gulf, Like Barry. Second is a focusing mechanism like a trof of low pressure at the 10,000' to 20,000' level. That's what we had in the July Flood of 2002 and its the same now. That trof converges juicy air currents and forces them to lift. Once the lifting process begins the wet air releases latent heat of condensation and that heat makes the cloud lift rapidly upward like a hot air balloon. It's the same process that fuels hurricanes except they're over land. Computer models are pretty lousy calculating that heat release and none of them can pinpoint the bullseye of these rain bombs. Neither can I. All I can see is the potential.
What's next? The saturated atmosphere is still with us. The trof of low pressure now east of SA will be shifting slowly westward over SA back into the Hill country next 36 hours. By Monday it will be far west and out of here. Until then the radar will tell the story and it will change from hour to hour. I expect more pockets of torrential rain so pay attention and stay safe out there.

This video does a better job of what I was trying to convey from my experience. I took like ten minutes to grab all my stuff and throw my son in the car and in that ten minutes the situation changed so much that if I'd have waited another ten minutes to start getting ready we wouldn't have had time to pack up anything.

Ultimately the stuff doesn't matter but it just shows how fast this happens.

Is this weather system the remnants of a tropical storm in the Pacific? Curious where all this came from. I live in Midland and we had rain for 4 days straight, but it wasn't at this level - we only got about 3.5" at our house.

Insane. I drive over this bridge very often.

Prior to yesterday the level has been so low you can barely see while driving over the bridge.

Have family that went to New Braunfels for the weekend. They are leaving now (and safe and sound) due to heavy rains and apparently a mandatory evacuation along the river. Be safe everyone.

And (new braunfels again) mandatory evacuation per my family because they'll be releasing water from canyon lake downstream.

River Road south of the dam having issues now. If they start having to release water from the dam it will get bad all the way to Gruene. We just had a pretty good downpour for the last hour. Fortunately we are by Turkey cove.

Know someone who's home was flooded up in Liberty Hill this morning. They live on/above the San Gabriel River.

All the flooding below the dam right now is just from runoff from the hills. Canyon hasn't risen at the dam yet. The lake would have to rise 70' before they'd have to consider a release.
