I'm looking for guidance on this question, and I value the thoughts and opinions on this board. Is Paxton a corrupt SOB with too much baggage, or is this just another example of the left dragging down every conservative that stands up to them? Or somewhere in the middle?

Probably somewhere in the middle but leaning towards Paxton is a corrupt SOB with too much baggage.

All politicians are corrupt. If they're not when they enter politics, they will be by the time they leave.

I keep hearing about all this baggage but other than an affair I don't know what any of it is. Pulled the lever for him today and took two co-workers with me.

He also retaliated against 8 AAG's who were whistleblowers in the state Attorney General office. One whistleblower could be a personal vendetta. Eight means there's smoke.

4 more Paxton votes from my household today. **** Cornyn. I don't care if Paxton screwed around on his wife. Not my circus. Not my monkeys.

lol. His best friend's sister's boyfriend's brother's girlfriend heard from this guy who knows this kid who's going with a girl who is the source.

It all came out in the impeachment trial.

Could be, would be, smoke, blah, blah, blah. It's always hearsay and he said, she said about Paxton.

He's been a solid conservative AG. He'll be a solid conservative Senator.

I always see these things in the light of the Greg Hill suspension at A&M. Everyone does shady stuff in Austin, but going against the cool kids is what gets you in trouble.

One thing is for sure, the Texas GOP is not conservative by any means. I could absolutely see a bunch of Texas RINOs lining up against Paxton for being too MAGA, so the number doesn't mean anything to me.

In the end, he was acquitted, I believe?

Paxton is a populist; he's not a conservative.

With Paxton the likely candidate, I may well stay home Nov. 3. I know for a fact others in my social circle (all straight line Trump voters) will do the same, or skip voting for him at least. Policies are generally all fine, but the man isn't worth my endorsement.

Not ideal for sure. Hope enough folks show up to keep out the dem's pet heretic.

Is the intent to attempt to teach the GOP a lesson by letting the left loons + suburban housewives elect a dude that makes Joel Osteen look like Wes Huff?

Impeachment is ultimately a political process and there were several state senators who felt it too risky for their own political futures to vote to convict. IMO there was ample evidence to convict but Paxton was wielding too much political capital to risk voting guilty if there's no guarantee others would follow through and do the same.

The evidence was that Paxton pressured people within the Texas Attorney General's office to impede a federal investigation into one of Paxton's major donors. That donor also employed Paxton's mistress.

Not a chance in hell I do anything that risks putting a Dem closer to taking an office. I'll vote for a terrible Republican candidate as long as the candidate is part of keeping lunatic democrats out of power. They are far too reckless and sociopathic to be given even a chance at it.

Got a link to a thread that talks about the evidence?

Sadly, this is what it's become for me. I know the "conservatives" I vote for won't end up doing any of the things they promise to do. I just hope they keep the lunatic fringe from doing what they promise to do.

We were promised that the "republicans" would prove all the accusations in his impeachment. They were not able to prove any of them. Just lies.

Political hit job from the democrat wing of the republican party.

Here's a summary of the allegations from a quick google search that pulled in a few sources:

Quote:

1. The Nate Paul Scandal (Bribery and Abuse of Office)

The most prominent allegations center around Paxton's relationship with Nate Paul, an Austin real estate developer and campaign donor. Top aides in Paxton's office reported him to the FBI in 2020, alleging he used his office to do favors for Paul in exchange for personal benefits.

Alleged Favors: Paxton allegedly directed his agency to intervene in Paul's business disputes, attempted to influence an ongoing investigation, and provided Paul with confidential law enforcement files.

Alleged Bribes: In return, Paul allegedly helped finance expensive renovations to Paxton's Austin home and provided a job to a woman with whom Paxton was having an extramarital affair.

Outcome: The Texas House impeached Paxton on 20 articles in 2023, but he was acquitted by the Texas Senate in September 2023. Following a separate federal investigation into the same claims, the U.S. Department of Justice declined to prosecute Paxton

.2. Whistleblower Retaliation

When Paxton's senior staff reported his alleged unlawful acts to law enforcement, Paxton fired or retaliated against them.

Outcome: The whistleblowers filed a wrongful termination lawsuit. In April 2025, a court ordered a \(\$6.6\) million judgment in favor of the former aides

.3. Securities Fraud Indictment

Paxton was indicted in 2015 on three felony charges of securities fraud.

The Allegations: Paxton allegedly persuaded investors to buy stock in a tech company called Servergy without disclosing that he would receive a financial commission.

Outcome: The years-long case was finally resolved in March 2024 when Paxton reached a pretrial diversion agreement. The deal required him to complete 100 hours of community service, pay thousands in restitution, and take legal ethics classes to avoid a trial.

4. Recent Scrutiny

Paxton and his office have also come under fire regarding a plea deal they offered to a Waco man charged with child sexual abuse. The deal, which was heavily criticized by political opponents across party lines, would have allowed the offender to plead guilty to misdemeanors and serve just one day in jail.

He also had (at least) two affairs on his wife of 30+ years, until she divorced him last year.

Yep, he is solid alright. Claimed 3 homestead exemptions to get better mortgage rates and lower property taxes on all three. Didn't some mouthy democrat up north get caught doing the same thing.

I think the baggage is somewhere in the middle, and I am worried that it could drag him down in the general election. The risk is losing many independent voters and even some Cornyn supporters. We must keep this seat red, and Cornyn is the much better choice to do that. This is exactly why I am voting for Cornyn in the runoff after voting for Hunt in the primary, and I will vote for Paxton in the general election if he wins the runoff. Abstaining from the general election or voting for a third party means fewer votes that Talarico needs to win the general election.

I question the ability of someone to accurately judge the character of someone that cheated on his wife and say that person has "impeccable character."

That's exactly what will get Talarico in the Senate. Sometime you have to vote for a chitty Republican candidate to keep a chittier Democrat candidate out!
