Iryna Zarutska, the Ukrainian refugee killed on a train in North Carolina in 2025 with video of the attack. Brown, her attacker, had a long history of violent crime and mental illness. Brown's mother tried to have him involuntarily committed to a mental institution, but failed.
Zarutska's attack became a rallying point for increasing public safety as well as against the "compassionate" elimination of institutionalization. Under current laws, it is almost impossible to commit someone against their will until AFTER they commit violent acts.
A lgbqt bar in Providence RI decided to honor Zarutska with a mural - the mural was partially paid for by Elon Musk. The liberal mayor decided to fight this mural tooth and nail - largely because Trump and other conservatives honored her. Among the talking points - there was no Black Lives Matters memorial. :-(
The mayor just won, the mural came down.
Most liberals have little ability to tolerate other viewpoints, and this has been noted in scientific literature comparing conservatives to liberals. They do not care about the human cost of many of their policies, nor do they want to be reminded of these costs. I will remember Iryna Zarutska - mural or no mural.
