Caribbean resorts are chomping at the bit for Cuba to open to capitalism.

That is actually one of the reasons, in the last 30-40 years, that Mexico has been so supportive of Cuba. Lot better if most gringos can't go there.

Most folks don't know, but Cancun is man made, the sand was even brought in from Veracruz. it was a totally planned development whose initial intent was to be a Cuba like attraction to the US, sans gambling. Quintana Roo wasn't even a Mexican state until 1974/5, it was just a territory with limited MexFed presence. 2/3rd of the US population lives closer to Cuba than to Cancun or the Mexican Caribbean.

Cuba opens up and develops it will come right outta the back pocket of Cancun and that whole deal the Mexicans created down there. Punta Cana has hurt them as well.

Canadians not gringos?

Years ago it felt like that was the only place I ever heard about them traveling to.

When I lived in Nicaragua, a slew of Canadians would visit there in the winter, many preferred it over Cuba. Canadians don't drop the coin like the real gringos do, and there ain't that many of them. Supposedly those Cuban all inclusive packages that were sold up in Canada were fairly cheap, in both $$ and in experience. The Spanish and Russians, plus other Euros also visited Cuba quite a bit.

Makes sense. I was much younger and lighter in the pocket so these guys would have been on the cheap. Thanks for circling back!

Havana Docks case was revived this week by Scotus/Justice Thomas opinion, which could have interesting impacts for cruise operators/ongoing commerce.
Quote:

There's a long and tortured history to the case: The company obtained $110 million judgments against four cruise companies, Royal Caribbean Cruises, Norwegian Cruise Line Holdings, and Carnival Corp., but a federal appeals court tossed them, saying the company's concession would have expired in 2004. SCOTUS just revived the lawsuits, ruling that the cruise lines could still face liability even though Havana Docks' concession expired in 2004, and sent the cases back to the lower courts.

Congress passed the law that enabled Havana Docks to sue, the Cuban Liberty and Democratic Solidarity Act (also known as the HelmsBurton Act), in 1996 after Cuba shot down two unarmed civilian planes, killing four.

Interestingly, the Department of Justice indicted Fidel's brother Ral Castro on Wednesday for masterminding those murders.

U.S. companies were prevented from taking advantage of the law for decades because Presidents Clinton, George W. Bush, and Obama ordered a suspension of its provisions for foreign-policy reasons. President Donald Trump let the suspension lapse in his first term in the Oval Office.

Of course the democrat dissent would side with the communists.

is "female companionship" legal in Cuba?

If so I could see that place bringing in billions of dollars a year with direct flights from Miami

I was hoping the depopulation of Ukraine would have resolved any resource limitations in this area.

Coochie, cocaine and Cartagena. Giddy up.

Interesting.

"CBS News has confirmed that Cuba has acquired attack drones, it's not clear who provided the drones or how they were obtained. On Sunday, Axios, which first reported the news of the Cuban drones, said Havana had obtained more than 300 military drones and had discussed plans to use them to attack the U.S. military installation at Guantanamo Bay if hostilities with the U.S. erupt."

Dumb idea. Attack Guantanamo? Yeah, that would not end well for the regime.

As the article says, it would be in response to US military action.

You think they're just going to shrug and take it passively?

The number of military bases in Florida just a hop skip and a jump from Cuba was my thinking. They have training missions that go out farther than Cuba.

Lots of our very fancy weapons, including the ones we don't have, are kept in Florida.

Agree. They launch a drone? We know. Retaliation will be a matter of minutes.

A handful of shahed-style drones (geroman) hitting greater Miami would have only the strategic impact of ensuring Cuban leadership would be deposed in short order. Laughable at best as a threat.

Members of Congress and other DNC communist operatives need to be next.

We need a McCarthy era purge of the anti Americans from gubmit.

Nancy Mace is pushing for a natural born citizen requirement for all federal offices and says states and locals should follow the same. I agree completely.
