I know there's probably already a thread somewhere, but I finally started this the other night and turned it off after like 10-15 minutes. Never even got to Benoit Blanc. I just couldn't get over the ridiculousness of a Catholic priest as a widower with a daughter and a fortune in the bank. Also the whole monsignor thing. Along with the rest of the characters, it was worse than the second Knives Out, which wasn't nearly as good as the first.

There's a thread about it somewhere. I thought it was the best of the Knives Out Trilogy.

The second one was stupid.

Wake Up Dead Man was actually pretty good, imo. I'm fine with someone deciding something isn't really for them and turning it off, but then to make all your follow-up critiques, having not actually watched the movie, is kind of silly.

Actually finished this one for the first time last night, took two nights to watch it with a 2 year old refusing to sleep, I thought the same thing at first, the set up took what felt like a really long time and Monday night I was basically playing chicken with the wife to see who would turn it off first, but once Blanc shows up and solving the mystery starts, it ended up being really good. We're not Catholic so some of the ridiculousness didn't matter to us, but the character set up made sense as the story played out. I was shocked at how many big names were in this movie. Josh Brolin did a great job of playing a major DB.

Nothing wrong with saying its not for you, but also put me down as a vote to give it a second try.

Especially given his complaint about the portrayal of Catholic clergy when the movie goes out of its way to change that initial negative view by the end of the movie.

Nope, no Ana de Armas places it in second. Also, Mila Kunis as the sheriff was an odd casting decision.

That was really odd choice. Reminded me of Janeane Garofalo as a cop in Cop Land, just looked so out of place.

To me the best part of the second one was the revelation that Edward Norton's character is an actual idiot. I can remember watching the movie and things he said kept not making sense, which I thought was odd for a billionaire written by Rian Johnson. Then later it's revealed he's 100% an idiot. I enjoyed that he took it in that direction, clearing up the mystery about whether a main character is or isn't stupid was fun IMO. Knives Out is the best of the three but the other two have their place and are enjoyable in different ways.

Glass Onion is a mystery movie with absolutely zero way for the audience to solve it. It fails in its own genre.

Yeah I enjoyed this one way more than the second.

I think I saw an interview with Daniel Craig at some point talking about how he built the character around being as extravagant and over the top as possible.

Kind of changed my perspective on these movies and now I enjoy them a lot more as just a ridiculous spectacle.

The follow up critiques were from the first 15 minutes. There's no such thing as a Catholic priest who's a widower. They also don't have money. The background of the characters in the town just seemed absolutely ridiculous. I don't need to watch the rest of the movie too get that from first 15 minutes.

The way I remember it from growing up was that priests weren't supposed to have sex before or after ordination, but maybe that's wrong. From how I grew up though, it just seemed really, really out there.

I did like the younger priest and his portrayal though.

Sounds like it wasn't necessarily the movie that was bad, because it wasn't, but rather that they portrayed a Catholic priest in a way you found offensive being Catholic. Therefore, you didn't want to give the movie a try at all because you were offended.

They explain the money, by the way. But you have to watch longer than 15 minutes to find out where it came from.

I still like the first one best for a few reasons, but loved the ending to this one the most by far.

I have a slight beef with all three, and it's that Johnson gets great actors to play some funny or unique characters, but often times those characters are just window dressing. I never for a second suspected Kerry Washington or the author. They were just kind of there.

The family in the first Knives Out was great but ultimately useless because the killer and the deaths along the way kinda had nothing to do with them. It's a colorful cast but not even really red herrings. So that's always a little disappointing to me.

You nailed it.

If OP made it fifteen minutes into this movie how long do you think he'd last with Dogma?

That's another thing with watching at home, especially given our modern short attention spans - it's really easy to get impatient and just turn a movie off and pull up Youtube videos of runaway tires and escalator fails.

If I paid $12 for a ticket and $30 on snacks, I am sitting there and watching all previews, ads, post credit content and getting my damn moneys worth.

Just kidding, I don't watch anything once the first line of the credits roll.

Was the priest a pedophile? Oh wasn't? He was a widower with a kid that easily could become a priest after that? Jeez

This one made me really like Josh O'Connor. For the foreseeable future I will be buying whatever he's selling. Looking forward to Disclosure Day!

Get ready to have your mind blown... There are married priests. Not many, but they exist. There is nothing about being celibate before priesthood.

I can see how someone would start the movie and think it was going to make a complete mockery of Catholicism or Christianity. But our main character is actually written as the only true Believer in a place where he is surrounded by charlatans and pretenders.

As a Christian, albeit not a Catholic, I really appreciated how they handled this character and his faith.

This is a really good point. When I first turned it on I kind of rolled my eyes and thought oh great another Hollywood movie ripping on Christian's but didn't end up feeling that way at all.
