I've been on an elevated/arthouse kick lately

My wife and I's 4.5 year old has been having some light health issues so we've moved her bed down into our room in case she needs a breathing treatment during the night.

Unfortunately, this has put a little bit of a dent in our night life; so I have been watching movies on my ipad using my noise canceling headphones. I've come across a few hidden gems I wanted to share and see if anyone else had any recommendations.

Absolutely loved
-St. Maud
-Hereditary
-The Babadook
-The Night House
-A Dark Song- really really good and unlike anything I've ever seen before
-The Invitation
-Let Me In
-Longlegs

Liked
-Coherence
-Mulholland Drive
-The Killing of a Sacred Deer
- The blackcoat's daughter - well acted, seems like it might be a prequel to Longlegs
- Black Swan
-Smile 1

Meh
- Relic
- Midsommar- Daylight horror and paganism are a terrible mix
- It follows
-The VVitch
-The Lodge

Hated
-The Substance- pornographic, and the last 20 minutes will have you thinking a joke has been played on you.
- Smile 2
-Funny Games

Hated Smile 2? That movie was super entertaining to me, and considerably better than the first.

What made you hate it?

If you haven't seen them, I'd add these to your list:

Melancholia
Irreversible
I Origins
Hush
Prisoners
Barbarian

The gore was really over the top, so much so it seemed comical

I've seen prisoners and barbarian. Prisoners is one of my all time faves, and I didn't really like Barbarian much.

I've heard good things about melancholia and I will check out the rest

Any time I want to freak my wife out I start saying "babadook....dook...dook"

OPs list is good on agree on midsommar. I had ultra high hopes for that one but was mildly let down.

Coherence is the one where the group is eating dinner together, correct? If that's the one, it's pretty wild the subtle things you can see change in the setting.

The VVitch is incredibly overrated imo.

Coherence is the one where people are eating dinner together, but so is the invitation. Coherence is amazing because it was made for $50k

Yep coherence is the one I was thinking of. Watched it twice, including once with my wife. She really liked it as well. There was another wild time travel movie I watched in a similar vein that I wish I could remember the name of.

Not mentioned here is Heretic which is also a great movie. High Grant is incredible in it.

Big Night - is one of my favorites. Just a beautiful little film with a perfect final long single shot scene.

Koyaanisqatsi - I saw in HS and it was so interesting to me and different that I used to travel with a VHS tape of it and would watch it when I could when I was crashing at a friends house.

Based on your op I would recommend The Empty Man

You need to watch Mulholland Drive about 3-4 more times before you begin to understand it to where you can intelligently discuss it with others... and then realize you have no clue what happened and watch it 3 more times.

lol. but kinda actually.

i mean it's really open to interpretation and even David Lynch refused to explain it.

I really only kinda liked it the first time I saw it and more from just a filmmaking perspective. The themes, imagery, style and cinematography. It seemed so disjointed which became more common in other films but it also starts to make a little more sense when you see it a few times.

I'd def suggest Lost Highway. I may even like it more than Mulholland Drive, but there's tons of similarities. Blue Velvet too as long as we're talking Lynch.

I'd also recommend Talk To Me and Bring Her Back.

If we are going down the David Lynch and arthouse horror path, then you must watch Eraserhead.

You won't regret it. Trust me.

Yep that's it! Good movie, need to watch again.

Dudes that made that are from my hometown. David Sullivan's (the ginger in the movie) older brother was a friend of mine. That movie hurt my head.

After I watched it I found a massive infographic that breaks it all down. Pretty funny.

Oh wow, you may be right. Makes sense as they both filmed in Atlanta.
