My Thoughts:
- Sinners with 16 nominations. I just don't get it. It was good but the most nominated film is history is wild to me. I've seen 6 of the 10 Best Picture nominees and I probably enjoyed it the least of those 6.

- F1 is a surprise for Best Picture. Edged out a couple foreign films, most notably "It Was Just An Accident" which I thought would make it after it got a best original screen play nod.

- I think the following seem to be pretty set, or would be upsets if they didn't win at this point:
Best Picture: One Battle After Another
Best Director: Paul Thomas Anderson
Best Actor: Timothe Chalamet
Best Actress: Jessie Buckley

- As always the supporting awards are the ones with the most up in the air.

Some more mainstream-ish pictures up for Best Picture this year. I did really enjoy Sinners but Frankenstein was just epic and would be my pick, do still need to see a few on the list but I've seen more than usual.

Agree that One Battle After Another will likely win and with your other picks, though could see Leo sneaking in for Best Actor.

I like: Ethan Hawke getting a nomination for "Blue Moon"

I do not like: "Warfare" getting snubbed for Best Sound

At the very least, I completely agree on the Warfare snub.

The sound in that movie was one of the most important and authentic aspects of the movie. This is one of those snubs, like Cinematography for The Batman, that I just don't get. I mean, I can accept those movies not necessarily winning the category, but not being nominated? That's absolutely insane.

I thought F1 for Best Picture was an odd choice. Surprised they didn't take Avatar Fire & Ash.

F1 gets the spot saved for Avatar or Wicked. I thought F1 was a good summer blockbuster, but not Best Picture worthy. No major surprises in the nominations that I saw.

Just realized I've seen Sinners. Thought it was just some throwaway Michael B Jordan vampire movie. It was entertaining but nothing special. Nothing seemed Oscar worthy about it, or is it just a week year?

You would be wrong.

At worst F1 is a blast of a popcorn movie.

Sinners was an alright vampire movie but I thought Weapons was a much better horror movie. Sinners may be the most overrated movie I've ever seen.

All in all, I don't think I've ever seen "Film Twitter" more satisfied with the nominations than I have today. Damn near every "outside chance" nomination that people wanted to see make the field, made it (Delroy Lindo, Elle Fanning, F1, etc). A lot of massive star-power too, from both veterans and newcomers alike. For a somewhat off year, this is pretty much best-case scenario, and should make for a great ceremony.

Just finished sinners and it is absolutely absurd that movie has the most nominations in history. It just wasn't very good.

Eta - I can see how people enjoyed it, but I thought it was terrible. It in no way is deserving of the most nominated movie of all time title though. Just the snake cgi alone should have kept it from getting all those nominations.

I really liked it but agree the most nominations ever is a little much.

The interesting thing is I don't think it's a frontrunner for many of those, if any.

I can't think of a single category I would give it the win for except maybe Score.

Absolutely insane that Don't Look Up is on that list and Catch Me If You Can is not.

I know they expanded the BP category recently, but it still makes no sense.

Also, Chalamet's resume is getting more and more insane every year. At this point he's already in the convo with some of the greats like Matt Damon, and it seems clear he is the next Leo.

Put me in the camp that Sinners was a good, fun movie but should be nowhere close to having the record for most nominations. Its gonna be one of those films people forget about in 5 years

I thought sinners had one great scene with the music taking them back through time but other than that is was a wildly cheesy horror flick and not that great. The music was cool, the vampire stuff sucked.

The final vampire scene where they all get killed was absolute garbage. So bad and so poorly done imo. The fire cyclone and the way all the crawling vampires just collapsed in unison just looked so bad. Then the final scene just seemed like white murder porn. Like it was supposed to be some cathartic release for the viewer. The movie gained nothing with that scene included. The movie was like one 2 hr device to show a black guy killing a bunch of big bad southern whites.

Overall I just thought the movie felt rushed as well. They get everything they need to start a new club sorted in one single day in small town southern Mississippi after not having been to the town in 7 years, then one of the brothers takes the time to count every penny they have made and compare it to their expenses and project they will be broke in two months? I mean this is the only reason the woman we t out after the vampires which set the whole thing off.

1) Sinners isn't my personal favorite of the year, but whether I love it or not, I am glad to see a movie that made almost $300 million at the box office leading the nominations pack.

2) The way nominations work just shows how much the industry as a whole loves the movie. Each branch picks their nominees. So costume branch picks costume nominees, music branch picks music, etc.. So getting 16 nominations just means all the branches loved the movie, showing bigger appeal.

3) It's only going to win like 3-4. Hopefully original screenplay, probably score, and maybe 1-2 of the other below the line categories.

I say that because it's seemed pretty clear that the Oscar was OBAA's to lose, but maybe the race is closer than it has seemed. I thought the Academy would fawn over Hamnet, and it did get a lot of nominations but it seems like the BP race is OBAA v Sinners. With the preferential ballot in play, it may come down to how many people put either of those at #2 if they don't put them at #1.

I haven't seen a majority of the nominated movies but was Benicio Del Toro's acting in One Battle After Another really worthy of a Best Supporting Actor nomination?

I thought he was great and he was an important piece of the movie, so yes. Seems like Skarsgard has the momentum, but del Toro would be a deserving winner IMO.

I thought the movie was fine for a popcorn horror flick. Sixteen nominations is absurd, undeniable politics. Just crazy. It has a 7.5 on IMDB which seems about right and in no way warrants 16 Oscar nominations.

Warfare snubbed for Sound is a travesty.

Never heard of Spielberg's Hamnet.
