Two days til the premiere of Dunk and Egg's first adventure on HBO, A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms.

Looking forward to this series is meant to be from the perspective of the smallfolk despite including some very familiar noble family characters.

In an egg shell (pun intended), this prequel to GoT follows the travels and growing friendship of a humble wandering knight, Ser Duncan "Dunk" the Tall, and his young squire as they navigate life, honor, and adventure across Westeros decades before the events of the original series. For non readers, this series takes place after House of the Dragon.

Final Trailer:

A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms

And in other news, GRRM says (to no one's surprise) he is not done with The Winds of Winter. Has other Dunk & Egg stories in mind plus lots of ideas in his head he has not put down on paper yet.

I went to see GRRM speak at Rudder in 2013. The lot of us got to see the Season 3 premiere of Game of Thrones 9 days before it came out on HBO.

When he asked for audience questions, someone yelled out "Go home and finish the next book!"
We all laughed.
That was 13 years ago.

It makes me sad that the last two books will never be finished, but the Dunk and Egg short stories are great and I'm excited about this. It will be way better than House of the Dragon.

I think you're right. HotD hasn't been terrible but that stupid interlude with Daemon at Harrenhall last season was the pits.

As for GRRM not wrapping up any of the unfinished books, it seems absolutely ludicrous and absurd that a 77 year old man who is sitting on the biggest literary franchise but has no succession plan. This is way bigger than LotR potentially.

Yeah he's said no one will finish the books without him but I don't believe for a second that after he's dead - if he doesn't complete it by some miracle - that his IP will not be sold off and finished by someone else.

There is too much money involved in the franchise to not have an ending.

He has maybe 10 years left, then the bidding war starts.

He probably has some contract that states it can't be sold for like 199 years

Haha it really set the tone that this is not the grand epic.

I liked the first episode, but I really hate that these will have such short run times. I know HBO doesn't normally release everything at once, but this might be a better bingeable series since this is really just going to be like a long movie in terms of run time. I imagine they don't want to do that with one of their biggest franchises though.

Just saw the first episode. Nice introduction to the main character. It has more comedic tones than the other series. Looking forward to next week

They grabbed me with the main GoT theme and then they **** all over it

Loved the first episode. Nice setup. In a world of just messed up people, and don't get me wrong that's part of the fun of GoT, but Dunk off the bat seems like a guy you can get behind. Thought the episode looked great and the score was great.

I was surprised Ramin Djawadi didn't do the score, but I still liked it a lot!

I listened to one of these books a while ago but I don't remember anything besides that the kids name was Egg. I remember enjoying it but I don't have any idea what's going to happen.

I enjoyed the first episode. Dunk made me smile. It's nice to see that world from a different perspective.

I loved the first episode. I think in the world of lords and princess it's refreshing to see a more grounded story.

Really good first episode and immediately makes you root for Dunk and want to follow his story. I'm looking forward to this series.

If you have a chance check out the companion podcast for a great interview they did with Martin. You can skip the middle of the podcast where they do "Would you Knight It" which is even dumber than it sounds.

George even mentions he'd like to write further Dunk and Egg novellas and I really wished one of the interviewers would have asked him "George, for God's sake, we're still waiting for The Winds of Winter!"

At this point I think more Dunk and Egg stories is probably the best we can realistically hope for before he dies.

Solid start, already hooked. Not sure we needed to see him taking a **** though.

Lyonel Baratheon kinda looks like a regular-sized Peter Dinklage.

Great first episode!

I do not remember the scene with Lyonel in The Hedge Knight novella, but they nailed that character. And it's no coincidence he looks like Peter Dinklage. He was supposed to look that way to provide something familiar for GoT viewers at a somewhat subliminal level.

Bummed it was so short but less is more sometimes.

Some of the accents were rough. I barely caught anything either of the Fossoways said.

Talk the Thrones podcast mentioned the Lyonel party scenes were a creation of the show and not in the novella

I have not read the Novella and am curious to find out the back story for the kid. Surely there is an interesting tale there and he turns out to be more than he seems so far.

I found it very boring and hard to get through. Had to rewatch at lunch today due to nodding off Sunday night. I am a huge fan so will happily continue to watch.

Not to spoil anything, but you are correct. It's been years since I read the stories so I can't remember in which one of them you find out, but gut feeling is that'll come out by the end of the first season.

For those who haven't read, or listened to the audiobook, Dunk reminds me of Forrest Gump in Westeros. He's not the brightest guy, but finds himself in the presence of people who turn out to be significant and he makes quite the impression on them. Because he's earnest and willing to work to earn his place in the world he's easy to root for, which isn't easy to find in the Game of Thrones universe. I really enjoyed the first episode and it felt like they really understood the tone of Dunk and Egg, there are real stakes for the characters but there's also a lot of humor. I thought the actor cast as Dunk was awesome, seems like a perfect fit.

Definitely looks like A Knights Tale (2001) lifted material from this (came out in 1998).

The whole episode feels like that but not in a bad way. Knight dies, squire takes over in a dishonest way even though he seems like a nice guy, heads to a tournament.

Weirdly I just rewatched A Knight's Tale. That movie rocks. The parallels are strong.

Do NOT watch the last part of that video above unless you want serious spoilers - don't even hover over the timeline.

Overall - good first episode. I knew of the book this was based on but never read it (unlike the main series).
