I lived in Clear Lake at the time of the Andrea Yates murders and trial and followed it pretty closely but did not know the extent to which she was influenced by a street preacher/cult leader. This doc explores all of that and has an Aggie connection. The preacher traveled the country confronting and yelling his sermons at people and made a stop at the A&M campus in 1986 where several students began following his preachings. One of them is a major part of this documentary describing a decade long ordeal of getting wrapped up in the cult.

I remember being disgusted by the husband Rusty as it seemed to me like he allowed the circumstances that led to all 5 of his children to die and this doc actually makes me even angrier at the man.

Really fascinating to learn the full truth of what happened.

I just watched. I am shocked at how matter of fact he was about all that. "well I just didn't know that the teachings would make her go that far!"

Yes you did, you just ignored all the signs.

The most alarming thing he said was the quote in the end that in retrospect he doesn't think he would introduce Andrea to the guy's preaching if he could go back in time. You have got to be kidding me.

Definitely a no sh*t, Sherlock! moment right there. Craziness.

The fact he remarried is truly remarkable.

They are our neighbors. He's really active on our 'hood's Nextdoor group.

It's very odd.

I have a mutual friend and he was always active on discussion posts.

Some of which made me really want to say something along the lines of "big talk from you"

A year or so after the kids were murdered and Andrea was in jail awaiting trial I was at the Gold's Gym in Clear Lake and saw him working out. It was just odd seeing someone going on about their life after such a catastrophic event.

It was always odd seeing him out after that.

He worked for the Canadian Space Agency with the RMS on shuttle, would see him in meetings some.

We lived in Clear Lake City when I was in high school and moved to Austin after I graduated.

I think she actually lived on my street later.

Rill Lane. Anybody know for sure?

Is this one any good? HBO usually makes pretty good documentaries and docuseries, but I notice that this one is an ID production, which I have noticed are usually of lesser quality.

Have you watched The Alabama Solution?

My dad ran the prison system in Texas a few decades ago, and since retiring he has served as a consultant for other state systems. After watching this, I talked to him about it. He said the Alabama system is run by a bunch of incompetents who, when shown a failing audit of their facilities, gave zero ****s (my phrasing, not his).

It was pretty awful.

I actually started that one and got about 25 minutes in, but my wife said it was too depressing (I mean, she's not wrong obviously), so we changed it, but I intend to go back at some point and finish it.
