Still haven't seen it, btw. Had a work thing come up the day it released, I've been in Texas ever since, and no family wants to see it. So I'm waiting until I get back to LA next week to see it in IMAX.

anybody watch this in 4D? my kids want to do that but I'm skeptical it's worth it. the only movie I've liked in 4d was Twisters.

Horrible movie. Not worth it in the least…. Pure waste of 3+ hours…

Worth a watch - a bit too long like the second one - but I liked the continued development of pretty much all the characters. XD or IMAX is definitely the way to go.

I'm not sure how anyone can dislike this movie unless you just don't know what you're in for. It's like going to a Tex Mex restaurant and being mad that you eat pretty good chips and queso and some pretty good enchiladas. This movie was the same as the last two, visually insane (saw it IMAX 3D, looked amazing) and with a basic but serviceable plot. Who cares? Just enjoy it.

I can't get around how inaccurate the Pandoran armor is. It's like they don't even study history when they make these films.

Put me firmly in the "these movies rock" camp.

It does seem like Cameron may be at the end of his creativity with the franchise. It seems like this will make enough money to get 4 and 5 green-lit, but who do we think actually ends up directing?

Jake Sully can direct.

The part at the end where it said "Jake Sully will return in Avengers: Doomsday" really blew my mind

Being in an Avatar body makes him either a version of Vision or Ultron, right?

I think everyone expected this to do fine even by Cameron standards. But how is it tracking vs Part 2? Any falloff?

There's been drop-off from the 2nd to the 3rd movies, at least in the opening weekend box office. How that relates to the budget and returns on the movies, I have no idea. I'm sure they're still worthwhile for the studio.

Quote:

"Avatar: The Way of Water" had an opening weekend box office of $134 million in the United States. It grossed a total of approximately $435 million globally during its debut weekend.

Quote:

"Avatar: Fire and Ash" had an opening box office of approximately $88 million domestically. This was below expectations, which had projected an opening between $110 million and $125 million.

From what I understand, Fire and Ash has actually somehow outperformed The Way of Water post-opening-weekend.

For instance...

Global 2nd Weekend = $224.6M = The Way of Water

Global 2nd Weekend = $245.2M = Fire and Ash

... and it's continuing to close the gap. That said, ultimately, Fire and Ash is unlikely to catch The Way of Water's $2.32B global total gross, and will probably end up somewhere between $1.75B and $2B, which is still obviously a massive success, more than most experts anticipated, and more than enough to greenlight the fourth movie.

Who would you like to see direct 4 and 5?

Trying to be realistic, it's not going to be a NAME…like Villanueve or Nolan. But it has to be somebody who can handle the scale right away. So that makes me think Gareth Edwards or Wes Ball?

But a medium name I'd really be into is Joseph Kosinski.

I just don't think Cameron is going to do more and will hand the reigns to someone else, but it's got to be someone he likes that won't come fiddle with the story.

I saw speculation the other day that while Cameron might not direct, he'd almost assuredly still be incredibly hands-on and oversee the process. Basically, he'd just delegate a lot more (something I think even he mentioned recently). So, to that end, it might not even be someone we've heard of. It could be some crucial internal figure on the last two movies who's simply promoted/given more responsibility, with Cameron checking in remotely/in-person every few days or something. Maybe something along those lines.

I'm curious if any of that is due to the box office competition during the release of Way of Water versus the current box office competition for Fire and Ash.

Christmas Weekend of 2022 had (just in the top 10):
Way of Water
Black Panther
Puss in Boots:Last Wish
Babylon
The Whale
The Menu
Strange World
The Fablemans
Devotion

Christmas weekend of 2025 had (top 10):
Fire and Ash
Zootopia 2
Marty Supreme
Anaconda
The Housemaid
David
Spongebob Squarepants
Song Sung Blue
Wicked 2
Five Nights at Freddys 2

I've give the nod for better options to Christmas 2022, i.e. Way of Water had more competition on its 2nd weekend, a weekend where people want to get out of the house after being cooped up with family.

It'll be interesting to see if Fire and Ash continues to have legs.

Christmas Eve was a Saturday and Christmas fell on a Sunday in 2022 which seems like it would have negatively effected box office for that weekend. How they compare this upcoming weekend would probably be more useful.

Actually, Christmas Day is one of the busiest movie days of the year. Weekend numbers get a bump. Although, the non wknd numbers probably take a huge hit losing the holiday.

Which is weird to me. Not once have I thought about going to see a movie on Christmas Day.

Agree, but I've done it a few times. Avatar 2 and Titanic come to mind - guess Cameron owns the holiday.

I guess there is zero entertainment competition with everything else being closed and families often needing an afternoon to kill before dinner (or a desire to get the eff away from each other for a few hours).
