Starting a dedicated thread for the release tonight.

Because Avatar movies are usually movies people see throughout the holiday season and not necessarily opening night/weekend, I'm thinking we keep this spoiler-free at least through this weekend? Spoilers with spoiler tags are fine though.

Anyone watching tonight? Already got my IMAX 3D ticket for tonight, and going again on Monday night with my parents once they get here for their holiday vacation.

Can't wait.

I'm not excited about this, at all, but I'm sure I'll see it. My wife loves these movies.

I just want Cameron to get past them so he'll do something else.

I'll go see it this weekend or early next week. I'll walk out being amazed by the visuals. Then I'll never think of it again.

I don't know how anyone can walk away from this movie and call that anything less than an awesome theatrical experience. That was fantastic.

Were there repeated beats from the previous two movies? Sure, plenty. But to me, the majority felt like very clear and intentional references. Like George Lucas would say, it's like poetry. (I enjoyed a few scenes in particular that were basically lifted directly from the first movie, but updated to the new circumstances/characters.)

And for how long the movie is, it really doesn't feel it. There are maybe 15 minutes or so where it felt like the movie was dragging a bit, but just like Way of Water, it immediately picks back up. Somehow this movie really clips along, and feels tights despite the runtime.

There were at least 3 times that I teared up, and audible sniffling in the theater. Definitely the most emotional of the three.

I will say that this is definitely the most "Avatar" of all them. It turns it up to 11. If you like series, you will love it. If you haven't liked either, this will not be the movie that converts you.

Some minor gripes for me are:

1 - Varang was such a cool and interesting new character, and we did not get nearly enough of her. (Or of the ash clan in general.)
2 - The final resolution was slightly anticlimactic for me.
3 - The score felt a little lacking at times. (To be fair I'm a big score guy, most probably won't even notice.)

Overall though, Cameron does it again with this one. A visual feast that must be seen in the best, biggest theater you can find.

Couple of spoilery thoughts: Quaritch jumping and obviously surviving yet again was a bit of a letdown. This was probably the biggest repeated beat that bugged me a bit. But on the other hand, I was happy Varang survived because we need a lot more of her in the next movie. So I guess I can live with them both surviving because they're both great villains, and I want to see both of them again. I fully expect them to have kids in Avatar 4, since there will be a time jump as confirmed by Cameron.

Also, I was 100% convinced that Jake was going to sacrifice himself to save Spider at the end. And that Lo'ak would become the new Toruk Makto before the end. I suppose both of those can still happen in 4-5.

Oh, and that one review that said there was a scene that felt like LOTR meets Blade Runner? I knew exactly the scene they were talking about the second it started, and can confirm. That scene was awesome.

LOTR meets Blade Runner? So is it orks storming a dilapidated neon lit building, or nazguls flying dragons against the remains of a once great city now covered in fallout dust?

Caught this last night. What a incredible film experience. One of the best movies I have ever seen . The entire audience gave a standing ovation during the end credits

Audience clapped at the end of mine. It was really good though another climax during an eclipse and the youngest gets taken hostage again was a little old

Was a lot of fun, absolutely stunning visual and glad I saw it. The clan leader was really great

Quarritch wanted a taste of the Na'vi Punani

Where I'm at all the best screens are only showing it in 3d. Hard pass for me, guess I'll have to watch this at home next year.

I stand on my belief that these are worth seeing on the big screen and in 3D just for the visuals. It's literally just a journey, nothing more and nothing less. I'm ok with that.

What could possibly make you prefer watching it in 2D on a television than in the theater?

I read somewhere he is adapting Joe Abercrombie's The Devils as a film, which will be epic if so!

Reading a few posts tells me the main areas of this series I do not like are continued.

And that's not killing any main characters, GOT like.

It must be bc the CGI is so expensive it saves tons of money. You cannot tell me the actual storyline keeping the same main villain works. He's not close to a Darth Vader character. In fact, he annoys me.

Heck, the best part of the series so far was his death in the 1st movie.

I would say he actually has a good character arc in this one. Exploring the implications of him having a human son and him now being an avatar. But that is me.

If you already found him annoying it probably won't mean much

He has surprisingly become one of my favorite characters. He's definitely more interesting than Jake at this point in the series, and like said above, has a good arc that's continued in this movie.

My home theater. I'd watch it in the theater if they were showing in the largest screens without 3d.

Well if he actually pulled a Vader and sacrificed himself for his son, that might work. But it appears he continues on.

And again my main reason I don't like him is bc his death was so satisfying in one. Them bringing him back in two took away from that moment.

Gosh, I think they're really good. And it was 15 years between the first and second one. He did plenty of other things. Also, he filmed the one from a few years ago and this one at the same time, just took this long to edit them.

Watched with kids.
They thought 2 was better than 3.
I thought 3 was better than 2 but i nodded off a couple times in this one. I can barely remember 2 though.
These movies are just too long.
I saw several people walk out halfway through it as well.
Didn't really build up the new villain much.

Saw it today.

It's better than 2.

See it in 3D.

The world building and new creatures and new tech are always worth a watch.

Story was a bit disjointed. Maybe it was the editing?

Definitely left it open for another sequel.

Zoe Saldana doesn't get forgotten about in this one like she did in the last one.

There are still some sections where it looks like they filmed at 48fps or whatever it is. I'm not sure why he switches on those.

The CGi has really improved. Those sea creatures and the ikram look so realistic. And all of the vehicles, too.

I'm glad I went at the suggestion of my wife, but I haven't seen 2 again, and I won't seek out a rewatch of those one.

It was freaking long but moved along fairly well.

I thought yesterday I thought it was pretty good. Three hour plus movie but good. I don't like 3-D movies though because I always think the color is really dark. Saw it in regular but really enjoyed it.

If you do see it, I hope you like it.
