I finally watched this again, this time with my ultra-conservative, Gulf-of-America-t-shirt-wearing dad, my super-Christian, Sunday-school-teaching mom, my two church-going sisters, and one of their husbands, none of whom would vote for a liberal if you paid them a million dollars… and every one of them loved it. They all laughed multiple times throughout, thought DiCaprio was incredible, loved how insane Penn's character was (especially when it was revealed he survived the car wreck), and weren't offended in the least. If anything, it was such a refreshing reminder that the internet is made up of curmudgeons and drama queens. Not to mention, the movie is even better the second time around. Like, best-of-the-year for me, easily, at least so far. If it's not your thing, I totally get it, but calling people "complete lunatics" for loving it is ridiculous, and tells me damn near everything I need to know about you.

The more movies that poke fun at conservatives the better IMO

Best film of the year, and a contender for best of the decade so far. I loved it.

Watched this last night fully aware of what I'd read about the movie on this thread. I don't have a Gulf of America T-shirt, but I do have a Gulf of America Yeti tumbler, and I am a political conservative. I found the movie to be at the very least, very entertaining. It was well written. It was never slow or dull. I even enjoyed most of the actor's performances including one that I cannot stand in Sean Penn (but admittedly, I didn't even recognize him at first). Now this means nothing regarding my thoughts on the characters motivations - some of those characters in real life would be candidates for a free trip to some commie paradise, or maybe the proverbial helicopter ride.

At one point my wife said she was surprised I wasn't griping about what we were seeing. It was simply a good movie. So it is possible for political conservatives to enjoy movies that paint whites as racists or suggest that "we're going to set things right in this world" through violence.

I watched this film earlier today on HBO Max and ended up really enjoying it. While the very beginning might seem to make this film about the moral superiority of the left when it comes to immigration, that unravels quickly as the story unfolds. Most of the characters we're presented with from both the French 75 and their opposition are outright idiots. They also can't claim moral superiority when they use violence to achieve their goals and are willing to harm the innocent, but also rat out their compatriots when given the chance, not to mention walk out on their own child. The characters on both sides are so crazy that honestly any political stances anyone takes from this film are lost on me, whether you lean right or left. This movie felt too close to Succession for me to take it as left wing immigration propaganda, it's just too ridiculous. The French 75 are about as qualified to be revolutionaries as the Roy children are to run a media empire. The movie even acknowledges that they didn't accomplish anything. Sean Penn plays a military officer named Lockjaw who wants to join the Christmas Adventurers Club, which is just as ridiculous as the French 75 having characters named Junglep***y, Perfidia Beverly Hills, Sensei Sergio St. Carlos, and so on.

I just want to say that if you're on the fence about this film because of what has been said, it's worth a watch.
