Just FYI, I'm pretty sure that was an April Fool's joke, as it was April 1st in the timezone from which it was posted (DiscussingFilm is primarily based out of England). Lord and Miller mentioned that their initial "assembly cut" (which isn't really even a movie yet) was 3h 45m, but that it was "embarrassing" and that many parts of it "didn't land." In other words, I just can't see them releasing a version that's even longer than their assembly cut, as that wouldn't make any sense. I could be wrong, but I'd be surprised.
Yeah, it was more wishful thinking since they left some of the best parts of the book out.
I would take a longer cut that wasn't a mess for sure. I'm still holding out a tiny hope we get a longer cut of Dune with that dinner scene that was cut.

already reading mario galaxy is set to beat the first movies long opening weekend and likely grossed close to 40 million just today.....
The first Mario did $205M domestic over its opening five-day weekend. As of the time of that tweet (24 hours ago), the sequel was "only" projected to do $175-$200M over its five-day weekend. Combined with worse reviews, projections had it falling just short of the original. That said, it's still early and $205M is obviously within reach, while reviews are basically meaningless for a movie like that. Still, that account is one of the most accurate/plugged-in box office prognosticators around, and I trust him more than just about anyone else.

They kept this in the movie and is a great scene with the NASA crew and when it switches to Watney he is complaining about the Disco music instead of the aquaman dialog.
My two cents as a guy who knew almost nothing about the plot going in:
-Gosling was amazing, carrying the film like that all by himself.
-I saw a late showing and was tired so I admittedly sort of glazed over at some part near the end. Not the movie's fault.
-I like it a lot, but I came home and told my wife, without even knowing this was a book, that the movie needed to be like an hour longer to really explain or show how a lot of his successes happened. I felt like we missed out on the struggle and joy of solving all the problems he had to solve. I'll absolutely be watching the 4 hour director's cut or whatever. I normally don't want long movies to be even longer, but this one I definitely did.
-Along those lines, I thought the way he and Rocky learned each other's languages was way too fast and easy in this movie. Granted, I'm comparing this to Arrival which is one of my all time favorite movies, and Arrival spent sooo much time on that, which I liked. This movie, it was just so fast and easy, that part didn't sit well with me.
-From there, I thought Rocky's tone and interactions got way too cutesy. Like, he understands humor and sarcasm? There's so much nuance to language, some of the ease of communication just felt like too much for me. I think it would have been more believable though if the process took a lot longer on film.
-Speaking of Rocky being too cutesy, I just didn't care for the way he went from basically being a stone crab to being portrayed with actual cuteness. To me that took away from the seriousness of the movie. Yes I did laugh at some of it, but still just didn't feel like it landed.
-All in all, I really, really liked it. Those are just nitpicks. I liked it enough that I'll see it again and I can't stop thinking about the movie. That's a winner. Gosling was a huge part of that. He just did so, so well.

I agree completely. Rocky was brilliant and did most of the science in the book. He figured out how to solve their most pressing problems and the movie glossed all over that.
Give it a decade and Amazon can turn it into a limited 6-8 episode series and really expand on the science. This cut was perfect for the theater.
Anyone wishing for more that's read the book should give the Audio Book a listen. IMO it's the best way to enjoy PHM although I loved reading the book and watching the movie as well

The book/audiobook is so worth it. The depth of the story really makes a difference there. I too, agree that the movie glossed over some stuff I wish it hadn't. But I also understand that decisions have to be made when it's already 2.5 hours long.
I was impressed they stayed as faithful to the novel as they did. Great movie and really enjoyed it.
Saw the movie today. I'm a fan of Andy Weir's books and certainly enjoyed The Martian. Liked this movie, but I'm honestly not sure I could have kept up with it well without having read the book. Seems like I filled a lot of gaps in myself from the knowledge I had from the book. Just my opinion.
I saw it today, knew nothing going in, didn't feel more lost than any other syfi. I appreciated them not trying to get into the weeds on explaining science concepts, just doing a good story. Ryan G did a great job.

I can't remember the last time I went to a movie completely blind, I went with some family members last second. Didn't watch any trailers, nothing. One of the previews was for the audio book, mentioned the alien aspect and showed the alien ship from the movie. Would have been cool for that to be a surprise. Haha

This. My wife and I went last night (I read the book, she hadn't). And I kept thinking during the movie that 'no way non book readers are keeping up with the detail. And sure enough the after movie discussion revealed a lot of it didn't translate well enough.Duckhook said:

Saw it today and loved. I haven't read the book but it's definitely next in my list along with The Martian.

I was surprised in the book. Gave the book to my son to read and even told him he wasn't going to suspect the surprise. Trailers ruined that.
In the book the ship and robot arm were a bigger character; I didn't like they rushed past that; it took Ryland awhile to earn the right to exit the medical bay.
The learned language was a bit quick; if I remember correctly the clocks were a bigger player. Ryland says math is the universal language; they showed each other their clocks and then went straight to recording words.
Regardless, I enjoyed it as much as I enjoyed The Martian.
