Does anyone have a cheap acoustic guitar for sale around B/CS? My 13 year old son expressed some interest about learning how to play recently. For reference, I envision this from anywhere between him watching a YouTube video of "how to play guitar" for 10 minutes and putting it in the closet to never be touched again and "this is pretty cool, can I get some lessons".

I'd check Facebook marketplace first…usually some good deals on acoustic guitars (from folks who took the first route in your description) haha!!

My wife has one that I took to Thorne Music and got it set up and adjusted and new strings and all and it's been in a hanging case in the closet ever since. She no longer plays and when I play I use my guitars.

Let me ask her if she would part with it. I've sold a Takamine and a Yamaha on TexAgs and both were good guitars, they just weren't getting played as much.

I'll post back when I know something.

How cheap are we talking here?

Also, keep in mind that for a new player/student, having a guitar that is easier to play can help determine if they keep going or they decide it's too much work and put it in the closet.

There's no way that guitar plays well. There would be zero neck relief.

Not quite as cheap as some past specials, but still a really good deal

On a similar note….my mother-in-law sent me this original hollow body that she spotted this morning:

Purchased a week ago in NYC:

1977 Gibson RD Custom with the original case. Rare maple fretboard.
Pickups are 80s DiMarzio Super Distortions.
Bridge replaced with a Washburn roller bridge (not a Floyd rose), coil tapping switches for each pickup, and a "dummy" switch not currently hooked up to anything.

Did you buy a router jig, make one, or are you free handing it?

I took a break in my guitar building journey to redo my workshop. Hoping to have it completed in the next couple of weeks so I can start a build. Thinking about making one (electric) out of scraps I have to test my skill before I go to an actual good piece of wood.

The body and pickups are from a template I bought on Guitartemplates.com. The neck template is from Stewmac. The neck pocket and control cavity templates I made myself.

I just commissioned a guitar from Fatfinger Guitars. Specifically the DOA model. It was love at first site when i saw the deep blue stained DOA.

He's a 1-man band and building guitars is a part time gig, mainly for fun because between work and kids he hasn't made time to try to go full-time. Pending when he finishes the 5 in front of me, it'll be 6 to 10 months.

I found him via the Washburn N4 owners forum on Facebook. Those guys kept showing photos of their insane custom N4s by Fatfinger Guitars. I assumed he was a shop with a good connection to the Washburn factory but I eventually realized he's building clones. He doesn't show the N4s on his website but you can see a lot on his Insta.

Seems like a really good dude and his pricing is nuts. He'll do or try pretty much anything you want. When it comes to finishing he doesn't do anything with high gloss/buffing. If you want a fancy paint job he'll send it to a finisher who's does a lot of PRS and Ibanez custom shop stuff.

Instead of the deep blue (which still makes my pants stand at attention), i'm doing a very deep translucent teal. It'll be a tribute to my very first electric, a mid-80's Kramer Focus 1000. We've already discussed some mods from the blue. Compound 12-16, an asymmetrical neck a'la EVH, repositioned the volume knob, different headstock, etc. I'll end up w/a Pau Ferro, Kingwood, or Bois de Rose fretboard, hollow dot inlays, angled humbucker, locking tuners, EVH d-tuna. The only potential upcharge so far will be based on the cost of the fretboard and potentially a custom 12th fret inlay pending materials/complexity.

My original (not mine but appears to be identical).

I'm considering buying a 5150 replica body and a custom neck from Butala or Musikraft and using those as my first build/assembly.

One other thing. AI is a blast for mockups. I suck at it and made a few using Gemini for free. The teal is what I'm considering doing as an EVH diver down riff (or 5150 striped but all stripes being deeper teal than the stain).

The red was just an idea that seems damn fun. I've also considered doing a big Ratbones/Vato Rat on teal instead of the stripe. Would better capture my tribute since I was transitioning from skateboarding (no pun intended) to guitar as my #1 hobby when I got my first electric.
