As a preface, to my M&G review, I've intentionally stayed off the Star Wars TexAgs thread a lot the last year or so as I try to find healthier uses for my time then endlessly arguing and defending the franchise against other people with perfectly valid rights to their own opinions.
Tonight has been something I've been looking forward to with one of my daughters through a very long, stressful, and often very lonely past 13 months. It was her first time at Opening Night of a Star Wars film and she's been counting down the days for at least the last eight months. Having read some of the speculation that it wasn't going to be good or do well at the box office, I went in to it with lowered expectations for myself and really just wanting to spend the time with my daughter, who has been obsessed with Grogu since the minute she saw him in 2019, and obsessed with Yoda since she was probably 3.
All that said, I really enjoyed it, and I'll keep my review brief.
1) Jon Favreau did an excellent job keeping the characters realistic and not turning Grogu into Deux A Machina at any point. I really wish he had continued shepherding the TV show. He could have greatly improved the third season and had people a lot more excited for this movie.
2) Ludwig Gorrasson's soundtrack really enhanced the viewing experience. He expanded a ton on both Mando and Grogu's themes and really put great vibes for the different planets. He should score as many SW movies going forward as he can.
3) There's a 6-8 minute sequence in the last 1/3rd of the film that is different from anything that Star Wars has ever done. Almost no dialogue, just Mando & Grogu, and really beautifully shot. Favorite part of the movie for my daughter and me.
That's it! Well, and some photos with Internet protection for obvious reasons..
