Very common for deer/elk/ or any cervidae to rub and thrash their antlers when trying to rub drying velvet off or while in rut marking their territory. They can get caught up in all kinds of things because of such. We had an elk get about a half a roll of net fence wire stuck on his head. Sometimes it can cause death if the material gets wrapped around tree limbs, fences, post, etc and the animal cannot get to food or water.
If he survives and it stays on his head until he finally sheds his antlers he will drop the mess and the antlers and start again next spring growing new ones.

Happens here a lot with christmas lights. Pretty much every year one is dragging entire strings of lights. Every now and then a deer gets killed by them. A bear will get its head stuck in a bucket every now and then as well
