Howdy! I'm a current cadet, and I've heard scarce information about the Duncan Volunteers. Sometimes that they were a volunteer program for cadets to work as servers back when Duncan served family-style, sometimes that the DVs were a secret elitist organization that ruled the quad. Hell, I've even seen the DV Guide-on in the Sanders Center. Some things definitely seem more viable than others, but I've really just been looking for more information. I figured this would be a good place to ask!

I was a Duncan Volunteer many years ago. It is an elite special operations group. Training is brutal. Less than 1% pass the initial training and get the honor of the DV insignia. If this is something you are serious about, then I wish you the best. It will be a monumental undertaking, but something you won't regret.

Early my fish year, my outfit was sitting at our assigned table in Duncan for morning chow. We were locked up, and my two meanest pissheads were sitting across from me. One of my zips grabbed a biscuit and chunked it at a DV, hitting him square in the face, and it all occurred right in my direct line of sight. I've never tried so hard not to laugh, but I failed. Our pissheads punished us when we got back on deck, but seeing the goofy DV look around in anger to see who hit him was worth it. That was in the Fall of 1995.

*Cool story, bro*

I was a DV (Class of 1986).

Back in old Army days, when I was a Fish... You could sling chow at the family style dining for breakfast and dinner. My old lady ended up being the head waiter his Zip year. If I recall - you also got a ribbon for your uniform.
When the truth comes out, do not ask me how I knew.
Ask yourself why you did not.

I've heard a little about the "Head Waiter," could you elaborate a bit on the organizational structure of the DVs? Also, were there incentives? Getting paid or some other kind of reward besides a ribbon?

I always liked the DV insignia that was a fart off of the RV one.

DV!!!!!

Yeah, was a DV for most of my Jr year. Gotta pay the bills somehow. Mostly it was serving food, cleaning up the mess afterwards, and fixing broken chairs in the basement, and eating all the good ice cream bars before the rest of the corps showed up. The steam tunnels did terminate in the basement level of Duncan, however.

Yeah, we got paid the same wages as other low level student food service workers. I think I started at $4.75 an hour.

I recall a massive food fight in Duncan sometime around '94-'96. What a mess.

Still missing that Chicken Cordon Bleu.

When you realize the 2004 in someone's handle is the year they were born.

DVs weren't "volunteers", they were employees of food services of the University. The sad truth is they were somewhat disrespected by other cadets in a lunch lady kind of way. Cool kids didn't want that job. In reality, the DVs had a job close to their dorm, with access to all the best food, and hopefully they filled the plates of anyone who disparaged them with gobs of saliva. They got a free education in restaurant management and their resumes were solid. Respect.

Also, you really should take Lex's advise and post some nice Fighting Texas Aggie Duncan Dining Hall honeydew melons with your request.

Thank you. He's not following the rules.
I may evoke Rule 1 on his mom.

OK, they are starting the Duncan Volunteers again..... My son's ol' lady is going to be in the inaugural class. I need everything I can get on DV history, pics, insignia, hump it, .... you name it. Any help y'all can give me would be GREATLY appreciated!

P.S. Robbie Anderson, L2 Commander my senior year, later infantry officer and just an all around good guy was a DV. That told me that DVs were good people...
