Howdy to all my fellow Aggie cross country friends and interested visitors! This will be our annual cross country thread where we discuss all things Texas A&M Cross Country and anything relative to the sport as well. All are welcome to contribute and join in the discussion. 2025 should be a great year for our Aggie distance runners and I'm excited to showcase these athletes, share some meet previews with you all, give you all live updates from meets, post race recaps, recruiting, Texas High School cross country, and news from across the country!

This should be a really fun and competitive year for both of our squads! Both sides return a lot of talent and bring in some great pieces! Injuries derailed our last season as pieces like Cooper Cawthra and Victor Kibiego has to miss the season on the men's side and freshman phenom San Juanita Leal missed the majority of the season with an injury. Freshman and steeple all American Debora Cherono enrolled in January and didn't get to race last season but should be ready to roll this fall.

Our women will return Leal and Cherono into the mix and both will provide a huge boost to an already star studded team! Leading the group will be our seniors Kennady Fontenot and Emma Little and we'll see a more experienced Megan Roberts who went on a tear during track season as well as Maddie Peters who had a solid freshman cross season. We will be losing Elise Smoot and Maddie Livingston to eligibility and Shewaye Johnson has transferred. We will be adding 3 of the best in the Texas High School ranks in Sophia Bendet, Alexandra Fox, and Ava Cole.

On the men's side losing star veterans Jonathan Chung and Cooper Cawthra will be a challenge. Both provided leadership and consistency to a younger group. However, a lot of the roster is a lot more experienced. Leading the charge will be Victor Kibiego who was one of the nation's best in 2023, but missed all of 2024. Behind him is a hungry and talented group of runners. Zack Munger and Jack Johnston were mainstays at the top for us last season. We also return Luca Santorum, Aiden Gonzalez-Rodiles, Carter Gordy, Diego Heredia, Noah Willows, Hunter Jackson, and Ondrej Gajdos. Youssef Asslouj will be a big addition as will our two freshman Gavin Chapa and Caden Gary.

This season should be fun, unfortunately we won't be hosting regionals this year nor conference. However, we will host two meets the: Texas A&M Invitational and the Arturo Barrios Invitational with the latter being much more competitive and the former being split as a high school meet as well. Our home meets are really fun and our course offers an excellent atmosphere and opportunity to cheer on our Aggies!

If you followed along with our track team as they won a national championship, stay tuned for cross country season! Why wait 6 months to watch our Aggies run in an oval when you can watch some run on some hills and grass in a month!

Like I mentioned, soon I'll be posting individual previews for everyone on the roster just like I did last season and for the volleyball team this past summer. I'll begin with the newcomers and end with our seniors!

Before that I'll also give you an in-depth preview on our women and men's team for 2025!! The team hasn't posted a complete schedule or roster so there's many moving pieces that haven't been made public that I will share once we all find out! Additionally, with the new roster limits and transfer portal craze, it's hard to be certain who's returning and who's off the roster at this moment, but I'll do my best to keep us updated with that as well!! Hopefully I'll have the team previews up sometime this week!

Texas A&M Women's Cross Country 2025 Season Preview

Revenge season? Redemption Season? Both fitting titles for this upcoming 2025 season for our distance divas who are looking to rebound after an injury defined 2024 season. Coming off a 2023 season that saw our ladies advance to the NCAA National Cross Country Meet; our ladies were primed to make 2024 another historic season. They had returned lots of talent, brought in a stellar freshman class, and were also supposed to bring in star international recruit Debora Cherono from Kenya. Things were all looking up for this group.

2024 Recap
Unfortunately the setbacks began. Firstly, Cherono was unable to enroll in time for the fall semester. Our senior Maddie Livingston was coming into the year not as her old self due to injury, as was Shewaye Johnson who began the season injured and planned to redshirt. After leading our team in meet one winning the race, high school All-American and freshman superstar San Juanita Leal injured her foot and was forced to miss the majority of the season. Hobbled up, 2024 became an uphill climb. Our regional foes Arkansas, although not as strong as they have historically have been, and Tulane had loaded up in the portal. LSU returned plenty of talent, and tu lost a lot. Another top two finish was still in play, but near perfection would almost be a necessity.

Despite the setbacks, there were some promising signs. Redshirt freshman Megan Roberts bursted onto the scene beating some of the veterans on our roster. We all saw what she accomplished on the track in conference and even at the National Prelims, but those who followed saw her vast improvement on the grass in the fall. She'd go on to be our second best runner in conference and 3rd best runner at regionals. She had improved tremendously since her high school times and had established herself as one of the most talented runners on our roster. As I mentioned San Juanita Leal (or SJ) had only ran two races in the maroon and white before injury. She won the cowboy preview, which was a 4k, and placed 3rd in a 5k on her home course leading the Aggies. Her high school accolades could fill a novel and her talent was translating well to the college level. She was looking to be our number 1 for the entire season. A leg injury would sideline her the rest of the season and we could only hope she's healthy for 2025. Freshman Maddie Peters of Pearland Dawson would earn a spot in the lineup with her consistency and provided another bright spot as well. Veteran Kennedy Fontenot who was a big reason for the 2023 success, would be a mainstay at the top of our lineup Another veteran Emma Little was another dependable piece in the lineup for us.

Maddie Livingston, our leader, and one of the most talented distance runners from A&M this past decade had missed the entire 2024 track season due to injury and wasn't running like her old self during the 2024 cross season. A fully healthy Livingston would have been towards the top of the conference and region, but she had a big hill to climb. It hurt to see her go out like that, yet she still gave it her all every single meet and I'm sure provided excellent leadership to an overall younger team. Shewaye Johnson was another held back by injury. She ran one race unattached towards the end of the season and showed she was healthy enough to be placed back in the lineup and forgo her redshirt. She only ran 2 races for Texas A&M, conference and regionals. She'd finish as our 4th runner at. conference behind Fontenot, Roberts, and Peters. However, she finished as our top runner at regionals in an amazing race.

Despite the uphill battle, the girls still ran their hearts out and had a promising season, but fell short of their goals. injuries didn't help and I'm certain not having Cherono was a big blow. They were competitive in many meets as the year went on. Our top 5 at conference were Fontenot, Roberts, Peters, Johnson, and Elise Smoot. They placed 10th in the conference after finishing 6th in 2023. A disappointing result, but the goal of top two at regionals was still in play if they could get healthier. Arkansas was loaded at the top with Paitlyn Noe. Sydney Thorvaldsen, and Mia Cochran. Tulane had lots of Africans and veteran talent. tu, SMU, and LSU had some returning talent as well. We were down Leal, and had Livingston and Johnson not as their 2023 self. Regionals was a rough race as came in 6th. Shewaye Johnson surprisingly led the way for the Age with Kennedy Fontenot close behind. Roberts and Peters would come in 3rd and 4th for us with Maddie Livingston rounding out the top 5. With no one in the top 20 and our 4th and 5th outside the top 35, a top 2 finish would be out of reach. As a team they finished 6th behind Arkansas, tu, Tulane, LSU, and SMU. It was a bitter ending to a hopeful season and I'm sure the ladies are eager to shake the bad taste off of their mouth.

2025 Track
It's always interesting to see how these distance ladies bounce back on the track or carry on their momentum from cross country season. in the 2023 track season we saw Maddie Livingston emerge as one of our top runners and we saw it carry to the xc season. As did Kennedy Fontenot who had a great season in 2024 on the track and on the grass. After a rough xc season, it was imperative to see how our girls would respond on the track. Unfortunately we didn't get to see Leal run on the track aside from a couple laps indoors unattached as a rehab workout. However, we did finally get to see Debora Cherono enroll and race in the maroon and white.

From her first mile indoors to the 4th place place finish nationally in the steeple, all of Aggieland beams aware of her talent and fearless running. Cherono has already made her mark on the track, now we're all eager to see what she does this fall. Along side her was Kennady Fontenot who alternated breaking the school record with Cherono and also qualified to nationals. Fontenot also ran extremely well across the 3k and 5k. Freshman Roberts continued her momentum on the track where she would make her mark where she would place 8th indoors in the 3k and 5k against loaded competition!! She would then run just as great outdoors where she placed 7th in conference outdoors in the 10k and qualified to the NCAA National prelims in the both the 5k and 10k where she would run well above her ranking and finish 17th and 22nd.

As Cherono, Fontenot, and Roberts led the way for our distance group on the track. Other notable performers were Emma Little in the steeple who also made the NCAA prelims as she dropped her PR time significantly. Avery Perkins looked solid outdoors as did Maddie Jones and Penelope Gracey.

Track, is not the only indicator, but a great one to see how the fall would look like for our distance group. Our distance group ran exceptionally well after a round ending to the cross season. Let's hope that momentum carries into the fall!

Departures
2025 will be without some familiar faces on the course. Maddie Livingston who has been a fixture in our lineup since her first race freshman year has graduated. The Dripping Springs product has helped turn around this distance program and raised the standard for Texas A&M Cross Country. She led this team to nationals in 2023 and this program isn't on the rise without her. It'll feel different without her on the roster. We'll also be without Nicole Chastain. She came from high school in Georgia and made a home here in Aggieland and showed tremendous improvement each year. Although I'm not sure where she stands eligibility wise, she has been in college 5 years and may have a 6th year at least in cross because she was a listed as junior last year. But I'm not sure if Elise Smoot is coming back, although she is earning her masters here. I'd love to be wrong and I hope she can still run.

We did have one transfer out in Shewaye Johnson. This one's hard to wrap my head around as she finishes off the year really strong in cross country as our fastest runner at regionals. She even went on to run exceptionally well in track by placing 10th in the 10k outdoors in conference. North Dakota announced her signing and I was shocked to see it, but I hope everything works for the best for her side! She had a tremendous and inspiring story coming out of high school and I'll always be a Shewaye Johnson fan!

I'm also certain that there will be some more departures due to roster cuts, but without a roster we haven't heard or seen anything made public yet.

Newcomers
Technically we all know her and she's been in Aggieland since January, however Debora Cherono is a newcomer to Texas A&M Cross Country. We all saw her place her name in Aggie history every time she stepped on the track this season! She continuously broke her school record as she PR's every single time she competed in the event. She went on to place 4th at the NCAA Finals in the event and solidify herself as a distance phenom! She also broke the school record for the mile with a time of 4:38! She committed to the Aggies before last cross season but sadly she didn't enroll for the fall of 2024. Now that we know she's enrolled and is expected to compete for us this fall. Man oh man, it's time to dream big! She can help take this team to a higher level with her talent. She has raced in a 6k cross country course before Aggieland and her time was an insane 19:54 that was ran at altitude a few years ago. There's no saying how much her fitness level has improved and I'm extremely excited to see what she does this season in the maroon and white!! She can be the difference between us making nationals and not, this season could be historic with Cherono leading the charge!

We also added a trio of excellent freshman! Headlined by Sophia Bendet of Universal City Randolph just outside of San Antonio. Bendet comes in with some crazy PR's, a 4:40 mile which is 2 seconds off of Debora Cherono's mile school record. She has a 5k cross country best of 17:08. She was one of, if not, the best cross country runners this past fall in the state of Texas. She went undefeated only not winning two national meets where she placed 11th and 15th. Although she may be more of a 800/1500/1600 runner on the track, she has the talent to extend her range to a 6k mark that could be beneficial to our team's success! With her speed, if she can adapt smoothly to the 6k training, she can absolutely make her way into the lineup and make an impact year 1! I am so excited to see her in the maroon and white!

We also added 2 athletes from the storied program of Flower Mound High School. If you follow the sport, you know how dominate this program is. With recent athletes at many power 4 programs and distance powerhouses. The duo of Alexandra Fox and Ava Cole will both take their talents and accolades to Texas A&M. Fox competed at the state meet for Flower Mound all 4 years placing 20th, 3rd, 5th, and 5th. She has a 5k best of 17:22 and even a mile PR of 4:45. Her teammate Ava Cole was part of 3 of those state championships teams where she placed 6th at a senior and has a 5k best of 17:40. This duo will certainly push to be a factor in our lineup. They are winners and that work ethic and championship pedigree will pay dividends in their time in Aggieland! Now we need to keep recruiting Flower Mound lol!

Key Returners
Our team will have two veteran leaders that return lots of experience and great leadership qualities. As the 6th year seniors are slowly being pushed out of the NCAA, 4th year runners are the new oldies that will lead teams. No we don't have 30 year old Kenyans or Mormans, but we have two great Aggies and senior runners in Kennady Fontenot and Emma Little. Both were integral parts to our 2023 national team and both had their best seasons on the track in 2025. From what you can see on social media and at meets, the younger girls gravitate towards these two and this team is lucky to have these two women to look up too!

They both qualified to the NCAA National Prelims in the steeplechase with Fontenot advancing to the national finals in Eugene, Oregon. They both also PR'd in the 1500, 3000, and 5000 outdoors along with the steeple. Fontenot has been in our top 5 for the past 3 years She's a monster out on the cross country course and placed 14th at regionals as a sophomore. When she's at her best she can be one of the top ten runners in the entire region this year. Little's emergence into the top 5 was one of the main reasons our team jumped into the top 2 at regionals in 2023. We'll be in great hands with these two seniors leading the way every day.

I talked on this earlier, but the breakthrough of Megan Roberts could be expected to be seen this fall as well. She began to run extremely well last xc season, but it wasn't until track season where she'd show that she is a force to be reckoned with. She placed 45th at conference in the sec last cross season. However, she'd break into the top ten in the 10k outdoors and 3k indoors in the conference. If this translates into the grass she could really help this team and I fully expect her too! From what I've heard she seems like such a great person and has all the qualities you want in a person and athlete.

Roberts will technically go into her sophomore season, as will Maddie Peters. Peters redshirted outdoors so I hope she's healthy. She really showed her strength as a runner during cross season. She lead all the Aggies at the Arturo Barrios Invitational and was in the top 5 every meet. The talent is there for Peters and if she's healthy, I expect her to take her game to the next level. She should once again push to be in our top 5.

San Juanita Leal if healthy will be one of our best runners. She showed her strength and backed up her lengthy high school resume as she won the Cowboy Preview in her first ever collegiate cross country race. She'd then go on to place 3rd out of 155 runners at the Texas A&M Invitational behind two seniors. She is a competitive racer and she will undoubtedly boost this team's success. Hopefully her foot is healed and she can get back to doing what she does best, running fast and winning.

Two other sophomores are Staucie Lees and Penelope Gracey who had solid track seasons and they will be two to watch to make a big jump this season. Avery Perkins had a great spring on the track and she is a name to watch as well.

2025 Team Outlook
What makes cross country one of my favorite sports is the team aspect of it all. Most people think of this sport and track as individual sports, more so cross country. However, the team part of collegiate cross country makes this sport beautiful! 7-10 girls running for each other, pushing one another, all for the team! Even though only the top 5 places are counted, every runner is important. So we're only as strong as the number 5 runner.

Last year we were missing the big time runner who could place in the top ten at conference and/or regionals. This year we'll have Debora Cherono. We saw what she was capable this past track season. Her strength at the end of races gives me hope that she will be unstoppable in the fall. She only picked up the steeplechase this past season and kept improving her time as the competition rose. She has the strength to compete in cross country and has even competed in 10k cross country races back in Kenya. I'm excited to see what she will do in a 6k. Having her as the anchor of the lineup and always having that single digit place will be astronomical towards our team.

Behind her it will be a fun race for number 2. Fontenot showed much more strength this track season with many PR's. She also has the upper hand in experience. Leal, if healthy, will certainly have a say in the conversation as she was leading the way before her injury. Having seen her run since she was a freshman in high school, I know she's a gamer and will go toe to toe with anyone lined across from her. However, we can't forget about Megan Roberts who showed she can compete with not only the conference, but the nation this past track season. If that strength carries over these next few months, then everyone better watch out.

Having these 4 ladies will be a strong baseline to have and will certainly have us be a factor at conference and at regionals. However, we'll also have some other pieces that can bolster this lineup. Losing Shewaye will hurt, but Maddie Peters will be a year older and stronger and you can almost always see 2nd year athletes take a big jump, especially here under McRaven. Emma Little can most certainly be a factor in the lineup as well. A mainstay in the top 7 and top 5 the past two years, she looked her best this spring.

We also can't count out our freshman. Each of the past few years freshman have made their way into our top 5. Maddie Livingston looked strong as a freshman, as did Fontenot in 2022, Johnson in 2023, and Leal and Peters in 2024. You read the accolades, Sophia Bendet is one of the most accomplished and strong racers out of the high school ranks. She will most definitely push her way into the lineup. She is a known winner and I can't wait to see what she does this season in the maroon and white. For freshman it's much easier for women to contribute as they go from running 5k's in high school to 6k's in college, whereas the men go from a 5k to a 8k/10k. Alexandra Fox can certainly push some of these older girls as well and that's the beauty of recruiting well.

Complacency won't kick in and you'll have a competitive team pushing one another every single day. Thankfully we have some great coaching and great leaders to balance all of this and get the best out of the girls. Team chemistry is of the utmost importance and our girls seem to have plenty of it. We'll have plenty of amazing girls out on the course running together and for one another.

The goal isn't anything to sugarcoat or hide from. I'm sure the main goal is getting back to nationals. 2024 didn't end the way we wanted it too and I'm sure the girls have that bitter taste in their mouth still lingering and are eager to get rid of it. It's hard when your sport may only be defined by one 20 minute race. But, I believe in these girls. They are exceptional runners and by all accounts exceptional people. There's no better group of people to represent Texas A&M than these girls and I'm thankful I get to cheer them on and root for them. It's been an honor covering them on this site and I look forward to doing so once again.

This season can be special, we're all aware of what the goal is. I have no doubt in my mind that we can attain that goal and I know in a few months we'll be one of the two teams jumping up and down with dead tired legs as 5 Aggies sprint across the finish line. God willing health be on our side throughout this season. The revenge tour begins now...

Texas A&M Men's Cross Country 2025 Season Preview

You're not always given the keys, no one is there holding it for you, sometimes you just have to bust that door the f down and walk right through. For so many years it's always been the Arkansas show, the tu show, the Tulane show. It's time. It's time we show them what our guys distance program is all about. The window may be small, but this could be a great year for this team.

Transfers in, our underclassmen group of the last few years are juniors now, some talented freshman, it's time. With the cross country debut of Victor Kibiego. A 2023 Cross Country National Qualifier, who sat out last season. Including the addition of freshman Michael Kiplagat Moiben from Kenya as well will give us an incredible 1-2 punch. We have a transfer from the NAIA level in Youssef Asslouj who will fight for a lineup spot. We also have 2 incredible runners who helped lead our team last year in Jack Johnston and Zack Munger. Along with a host of other talented juniors along with a talented freshman in Gavin Chapa, this team is as loaded as it has been in recent years.

2024 Recap
Last season the biggest question going in was how would we replace national qualifier Eric Casarez. It was announced in the summer that we landed Victor Kibiego. He was a two time national qualifier in cross country and had placed 44th overall in 2023 at nationals. He would have been our clear cut leader and helped us out tremendously. Unfortunately as we waited and waited for his debut, it never came. Similarly, we were all curious to see how senior Cooper Cawthra would run as he just seemed to be improving every year and as we were all expecting a huge jump on the track, I knew a similar one would come in cross. Unfortunately, he never got to race as well. National qualifier and another senior Jonathan Chung began the year fighting back from injury. These injuries gave us an uphill climb similar to the women.

Without Casarez, without Kibiego, without Cawthra, the question was who would step up and lead this team. We knew Chung when fully healthy would be reliable and would fight every time he ran. However, after him, it was all youth. The runners available consisted of mostly underclassmen who were thrusted to the top of the lineup and asked to carry the team.

A few stepped up their game and ran extremely well. Arkansas, Tulane, and Tu had a senior heavy lineup. So the task to dethrone them would be a tall one. However we saw many great things out of the young guns. Jack Johnston and Zack Munger led the way most of the season. Munger would finish 19th at regionals and Gilbert Rono exploded late and would lead the team at sec's and regionals with a 17th place finish. Behind them Luca Santorum ran really well as did Aiden Gonzalez-Rodiles as they made multiple top 5's for our team.

After a rough outing at conference where the men placed 8th, they bounced back and ran much much better at regionals where they placed 4th. Rono and Munger were 17th and 19th. Johnston, Gonzalez-Rodiles, and Chung were 31-33. They ran well and stayed together well, however what was missing was that top ten finish. Kibiego missing the season really hurt us in a meet like this.

2025 Track
Just like I mentioned on the girls preview. You can always tell who's making big strides based on track performances. While some prefer running in an oval, a great spring leads to a great fall. Keep in mind the guys run a further distance than the men. At conference the guys run an 8k and at regionals a 10k, while the girls do a 6k in both.

After missing cross country due to injury, you have to forgive Mr Cawthra and Mr Kibiego because what a track season they had. Kibiego missed all of the indoor season recovering from his injury. But early on, we saw the time off really benefitted Cawthra as he exploded onto the scene shattering the school mile record with a 3:54. He then went on anchor our DMR with a 3:51 to help us advance to nationals and even place 4th at the national meet. Kibiego would make his debut outdoors where he ran really well and placed 2nd at conference in the steeple and placing 11th at the national meet. Cawthra was also a runner up at conference and made nationals in the 1500. So although it hurt seeing them miss cross country, they were exceptional on the track so it was the right decision!

We saw many other great things during track season from our distance crew. Jack Johnston had a 49 second PR in the 10k and broke 13:50 in the 5k showcasing his improved strength. We saw an impressive impressive season from Luca Santorum. Whether it was his impressive 1200 leg in the DMR or his impressive performances in the 800 and 1500. Santorum proved himself to be one of the better middle distance runners in the NCAA.

Our incoming junior group collected many many PR's. Diego Heredia ran extremely well 4:02 mile and 3:45 1500. Ondrej Gajdos also ran well in the middle distance events with a 4:02 and 3:44. Carter Gordy, Gonzalez-Rodiles, Noah Willows ran a 14:28, 14:30, and 14:32 5k. Hunter Jackson had a huge Pr in the steeple. Unfortunately Zack Munger didn't get to run after a few indoor races so I hope he's healthy because he's important to this team.

Our distance squad showed great improvement and great racing ability which I think will be a strength of this team this fall. They know how to compete, especially for one another. They are energetic, they are fearless, and these traits will pay off in the long run. Let's hope their improvements in the oval translate to the grass!

Departures
Two key departures will be from two veterans. You've gotten accustomed to seeing their names on our lineup. It'll be a tough adjustment not having Jonathan Chung and Cooper Cawthra running around Dale Watts. They provided stellar performances and great leadership. The Covid years gave us an extra year for some athletes and we were blessed with two great men and runners! They both have ran some races unattached as pros and I can't wait to continue cheering them on!

Another departure is Gilbert Rono, who entered the portal and transferred to one of our cross country rivals in Tulane (bangs fist on table). He had his best two cross country meets when it mattered most as he led our group at conference at regionals. He did PR during track season but was well off from qualifying with his 3:45 in his main event of the 1500. Unsure of why he left, but I thought he'd continue his momentum from last cross country season. Hopefully he doesn't help Tulane finish ahead of us.

Newcomers
He was technically a newcomer last year but as he didn't run, I suppose we can't count Victor Kibiego again since he hasn't suited up in a cross country race in the maroon and white. God willing he's healthy and can lead this team to a chance at nationals. He has an impressive cross country resume as a two time individual national qualifier. He is a conference USA champion and runner up. UTEP was in a different region than we were so he went up against much tougher competition with schools like BYU, NAU, Colorado, New Mexico, Montana State and more. Yet he qualified to nationals with a 20th and 9th place finish. Then at nationals he would go on to place 102nd as a freshman then 44th as a sophomore. He has his steeple accolades and I'm sure it hurt him not to be able to race for us last cross country season. If he's healthy, we'll have one of the best in the nation wearing A&M across his chest!

But ladies and gentlemen, what a late addition to our roster is the signing of Michael Kiplagat Moiben. From Eldoret, Kenya, Moiben comes to Aggieland with some high expectations. I'm trying to find more and more on Moiben, but from what I've seen, her has a 10k road race time of 28:07. Which is a really really great time. It's unknown what his track times are, but I'm curious to know. That's just one result I've found on him. So he may even have more impressive times, but we'll have to wait and see. And 10k road race at that time is impressive so if he's able to run for us, then I'm excited. The important part will be actually getting him here. We were unable to get Debora Cherono here in time for the fall semester last year, so I don't trust the team lol.

Out of the portal we went to the NAIA level to a familiar school, Cumberlands. I had never heard of this school until they gave us Luca Santorum. Now we reached out again and asked for another strong runner and NAIA national champion in Youssef Asslouj who also hails from Morocco. Asslouj comes in with an impressive resume as he is a two time National Champion in the 3000 indoors, has a runner up finish in the 1500 and 5000 outdoors, and placed 3rd in the NAIA cross country championships! His track times are absolutely impressive. In cross country he's only competed in 3 races. So I'm curious what his potential could be in cross country. The Cumberlands has been great to us, we need to send their coach a gift basket

Freshman wise, we only added one to the roster. However we probably added one of the best high school distance runners in Texas in Gavin Chapa of San Antonio Reagan. He is a 3 time state qualifier in cross country at the 6A level placing 25th, 10th, and 4th at the state meet. His xc 5k pr is 14:57 and he has a track pb's of 4:07 in the mile, 9:00 in the 3200, and a 14:24 5000 which would put him near the top of our distance guys in a race he's only raced less than a handful of times. He showed tremendous improvement year after year which is always a great sign. He has some impressive times on some difficult courses. He may push to be in our top 7 right away! I am so excited he chose Texas A&M and I can't wait to see the career he will have in Aggieland!

2025 Season Outlook
Now it'll be interesting to see how this team runs together. If Moiben joins and Kibiego is healthy, that gives us two very solid options to lead our team. In this sport if you can have two runners like that place really high, it could really help you have a low final score. That's how many teams in the past have advanced to nationals. In a regional meet, having those two bell cows in the top ten gives you a beautiful opportunity to do some damage. Last year we saw this team run well together, just no dominant runner placing in the single digits. That changes this year.

We know Kibiego and Moiben can lead this team. My question is who will step up to be numbers 3-5 or it's not out of the question if anyone can make a statement jump and run with Kibiego and Moiben. Munger and Johnston led the way most of last season, can they take the next step. Gonzalez-Rodiles, Santorum, Gordy, Heredia, Gajdos, Willows, and Jackson had great springs, can they take the next step. Or will it be a newcomer who steps up in Asslouj or Chapa.

The beauty in this team is the quality depth. This might be one of the more deeper teams we've had here on the men's side from top to bottom. The competition will push these guys each practice and will get the best out of one another. It's almost impossible to predict a 1-5 or a 1-7 lineup with this depth. But I'm grateful for the quality we get to choose from and I know McRaven and Abell will get to choose from a talented pool of runners!

This team is now an older group (not 30 like other schools), but older in experience. Many of these guys are now upperclassmen. We've seen the jump many men have made in our program as they have gotten older. McRaven does a great job of getting these guys to consistently improve year after year. That's why my biggest question is who will make the biggest jump.

Kibiego of healthy will be ready to run and prove he's one of the best in the country. Moiben has the talent to do the same. These two will carry this team far, but this is a TEAM sport, and we'll only go as far as the entire lineup takes us. I'm really excited to see who steps up and what this lineup will look like. Early on these races will be interesting and the competition amongst each other will be fierce!!

Arkansas may have one of its weaker teams in a while. Tulane will be strong at the top, but will our depth beat their depth. Texas has lost so many runners and so much depth, it's chaos in Austin. However, nothing will be handed to us. It's up to our guys to bust that door open and show everyone what they got. The time is now.

We'll probably run the Gans Creek Classic on Sep 26. I don't know why they chose that date for Arturo Barrios, it's the day before Missouri Pre-Nationals

I agree! I was wondering the same thing! It would be great to get into the Gans Creek Classic or maybe even get a meet at Arkansas too! I'm also assuming we'll open in Stillwater at the Cowboy Preview!

It's 50/50 on schools that have posted their schedules. I'm doubtful we'll get ours anytime soon

Not sure if there's a better pipeline in the state to build!! That's one hell of a program and I really think Ava Cole and Alexandra Fox will be great additions! They need to recruit their teammate Adeline Bennett who's a 2:12/4:47 800/1600 runner as a sophomore! She's the next one up!

Was always hoping Natalie Cook would find her way back to Aggieland

Appreciate the heads up! Would have loved to see us go to Mizzou or Arkansas since post season will be in those venues! But we'll see some regional foes at TCU and run a great course with lots of schools at Lehigh! When we last made nationals we opened up at TCU!

TCU course (if it's the same one as a few years ago) was kind of a s**thole. Hopefully none of the runners trip on any of the many cracks in the ground. Having said that, we have received more rain this year so hopefully it's in better shape.

Joyce Kemboi has a 15:43 PR in the 5k indoors which is huge! I'm curious what she'll do in cross country!

I can't find much as of now on Michael Moibin but he has a 28:07 10k in a road race which is incredible! He might be our number 1 cross country runner! Wow wow wow!

Cross Country Preview - TCU John McKenzie Invitational

Meet: John McKenzie Invitational
Date: August 29
Time: Women - 7:30, Men - 8:00
Location: AP Ranch Cross Country Championship Course - Fort Worth, Texas
Distance: 5k
Other Schools Competing: TCU, Tarleton, Wiley, Amarillo College
Live Results: http://live.ntxtiming.com/meets/697346

It's time folks! Shoes on the line, the birds chirping, the leaves falling, stopwatches being clicked, elbows being thrown, it's time to tie the line for a cross country race! Our Texas A&M Aggie Cross Country teams begin their 2025 campaigns in Fort Worth, Texas tomorrow morning with a couple 5k's!

Last year we opened our season with the ladies running a 3k and the men running a 4k, which to me was a little odd. It'll be nice to see where we're at this early with a 5k trial! Although not many will go out guns blazing, it will be nice to see where our fitness is! Unfortunately the competition won't really be stacked as only a few schools will be there. We should breeze through the competition although TCU has a few solid runners.

Although I'm warning you, we won't be racing our full team. It's still very early in the season. They do have a start list up, however I wouldn't trust that either. Week 1 and coaches play mind games lol.

On the starting list for the men is Gavin Chapa, Aiden Gonzalez-Rodiles, Carter Gordy, Diego Heredia, Hunter Jackson, Jack Johnston, Noah Willows, AND COOPER CAWTHRA?????? Huh???? Not sure if it's an error or not, but he is listed under Texas A&M! If he was granted a medical waiver, that would be amazing! Missing on that list is newcomers Youssef Asslouj and Michael Kiplagat Moiben. Victor Kibiego isn't listed either which is understandable since it's meet 1. Luca Santorum isn't slated to run either. So no internationals listed for us. Hopefully McRaven doesn't make us wait too long for their debuts. And hopefully Moiben will actually get to compete for us this fall…

On the women's side, we'll see the much awaited Aggie debuts for our freshman Sophia Bendet, Alexandra Fox, Ava Cole, as well as the first cross country race as an Aggie for Debora Cherono and Joyce Kemboi. We'll also see the return of Sj Leal after she suffered a season ending injury last season and was forced to redshirt. The rest of the ladies on the roster are set to run aside from seniors Emma Little and Austin Owen. We'll see if all 12 ladies actually compete.

I'm excited to see where we are this early in a season. A 5k will be a great indicator. I'm glad we'll get to practice running together. TCU has a stronger transfer on the men's side in Mohammed Kowa. TCU's strong female runner from last season got caught with a ban for PED's so their women's team won't be strong.

I want to see an Aggie sweep on the women's side. We'll see if any decide to blow it up early. If Cherono does run I'm also really excited to see how she runs a 5k! I'm hoping Leal runs as well, it would be awesome to see how she's recovered. We also get to see Fontenot in her last race as a senior. I'm expecting a huge season for her after her excellent track season. I'm excited to also see Megan Roberts after the track season she had. I want to see how our freshman run in their first collegiate race. We'll get to see if they run timid or run at the front of the pack with some confidence!

The men's side there will be a lot of key pieces not running, but we'll get to see the Aggie debut for Gavin Chapa as well as many of our returners including 6 juniors. We'll see who made big jumps this off-season. I'm really curious to see how Jack Johnston runs after his strong track season and I'm excited to see who leads the group.

An additional surprise is that we will also see Aggie great and Aggie Cross Country National Qualifier Eric Casarez run as he will be representing Thunder Road Running. It'll be awesome watching him run out there and I'm sure he'll carry our guys to an honest pace. His pro running career has been off to a great start!

I'll be up following along with the live stats and providing my commentary. It's just a little rust buster season opener so we must temper our expectations and reactions (I will not be doing so and I will overreact to every thing). But it's cross country, a beautiful sport and the kick start to our 2025 season. It's fun to follow along. Sorry I've been slacking with my bios. I finished about 10, lost them, then went on vacation so I have some work to do!

The 2025 season begins tomorrow. I really think this year can be special. We have some really strong teams, some excellent newcomers, some proven returners, and just so much excitement around these squads! Let's hope for a healthy race and let's hope they get after it!

Words from Distance Coach Wendel McRaven

"We are excited to head up to Fort Worth and kick off the season," distance coach Wendel McRaven said. "The first meet gives us a chance to see where everybody stacks up heading into the year. This year's team will be a mix of experienced veterans and some talented newcomers. This will be our first taste of competition and will give some of our athletes a chance to get some early season racing experience."
