Brauny's Best: Highlighting top high school performances from Week 10
The penultimate week of the high school football regular season is in the books in the Lone Star State, and with eyes set on the playoffs in Texas and around prep gridirons across the country, there were noteworthy performances from teams and players to provide a spark heading into the postseason. With that said, let's get into the Week 10 edition of Brauny's Best.
Texas A&M's Class
Goodyear (AZ) Desert Edge CB Camren Hamiel
- 7 tackles, 2.5 TFLs, 1 forced fumble, 99 yard kickoff return, 1 touchdown
This kid has quietly had a sensational season and is doing it on one of the best teams in the state of Arizona. What I love about his outing this past weekend is how much he affected the game outside of just covering a receiver. The tackle total and where they occurred on the field is a good indicator of his performance. He also got a chance to show off his wheels on a 99-yard kick return for a score that was the top highlight of an overall outstanding night. For whatever reason, I think Hamiel is flying under the radar in this class. He has a ton of translatable traits of an early impact player at the cornerback position.
State of Texas
2027 Port Neches-Groves RB Tyson Henry
- 300 all-purpose yards, one touchdown
While the numbers may not be as gaudy as some of the others around the state, I like guys who step up in big spots with trophies on the line. PN-G's junior tailback did just that in a district title-winning matchup vs. Montgomery. This kid runs tough. He may lack some top-end, breakaway speed, but he plenty makes up for it with his tenacity, contact balance and vision to find green grass. He ran for over 1,500 yards as a sophomore last year and is well on his way to eclipsing that total this season. It's hard not to look ahead and predict yet another high-stakes, playoff matchup between Port Neches-Groves and South Oak Cliff in a few weeks. A big night from Henry would go a long way for the boys from the Golden Triangle.
My Coverage
Cibolo Steele WR Micah Sheeler
- 4 receptions, 167 yards, 3 touchdowns
I thought about handing this one out to the entire Cibolo Steele team, considering they were playing New Braunfels Canyon with a district championship on the line and put the game away before the bands even got on the field for halftime. They also put together such a complete game that star running back and Texas A&M commit Jonathan Hatton Jr only had eight touches on the night, and they still won by 42 points. In the end, I decided to focus on Sheeler because of his gaudy stat line. The senior averaged over 40 yards per catch and scored on 75 percent of his touches.
