A&M sets its sights on No. 16 Lady Vols after momentous win vs. Horns

The top-25 action isn’t over yet!

Following a thrilling five-set win over No. 2-ranked Texas on Friday night, the Aggies face another top-25 matchup. 

As they head to Knoxville, the Maroon & White will take on No. 16 Tennessee at 2 p.m. CT on ESPN2.

The Lady Volunteers are 7-3 in the SEC, following a loss against Missouri on Friday.

“I think they’re the most underrated team in the conference right now,” said Jamie Morrison.

“Early on in the non-conference, when I was looking at their statistics, I was like, ‘Man, something's going on here.’ I started watching them, and they can play the game.”

On Saturday, senior Logan Lednicky extended her double-digit kill streak to 11.

If the Ags can keep up the high level of play that they displayed on Friday, they will leave the weekend with two top-25 wins.

“It’s another locked pick, if we play like (Friday night), both skill and grit, then we are going to be in a good spot.”

Now 10-1 in the SEC and 18-3 overall, the Aggies enter this match tied for second in the conference. They display the same growing confidence that they have had all season long. 

“I think (the win against Texas) gives us confidence, but I think we also already had it,” Kyndal Stowers said. “We have so much faith in this team and so much hope that we can achieve things that, honestly, going into the season, people probably thought that we couldn’t. So, I think it’s just another tally mark to keep going with that and believe in that.”

Powering the Aggies’ offense is senior setter Maddie Waak, who continues to lead the nation in assists per set (11.5) as she had 46 against the Longhorns.

Stowers had a standout performance with 22 kills as the reigning SEC Defensive Player of the Week, Ifenna Cos-Okpalla, added 15 kills and nine blocks.

Cos-Okpalla will look to be a problem at the net for the Lady Volunteers, as she is currently averaging 1.56 blocks per set, putting her at sixth in the nation.

Following a milestone win, the Aggies enter this match with momentum and confidence, continuing to strive for a deep postseason run. Adding another top-25 win to their resume would help push them towards just that.

It’s time for Morrison’s Ags to get back to business and keep the momentum rolling.
