Key notes from G Guerrieri interview
- It’s funny how winning cures a lot. We’ve been playing better and better every week. It’s just that we were not putting the ball in the back of the net against a couple of top-six teams in the country, and then Texas comes to town, and then we can do it. Great crowd. Great support out there at Ellis Field. Now, we've got to go on another road trip to Baton Rouge for a Friday night game.
- Well, a big part of it is just the personalities of the players. I know it sounds really cliché, but our girls don’t give up. They fight through all of it. Sunday was a good example. We go up to Norman, you know, it’s Oklahoma, so it’s windy. They are coming off a huge win, beating Alabama in Tuscaloosa. So they’re flying high. They’re very stylistically opposite of the way that we want to play. They’re all over us in the first 15 minutes, and players were fighting through that, getting ourselves back on our feet, and Oklahoma is hanging on as we continue to build our attack and go forward on it.
- That was just the steadfastness of who these women are. They are tough. They are a really tight, united group. I feel good about the culture of the team. It’s kind of next person up and does it well.
- We should get one person up next week. Tessa Lavender will be back. She’s been injured the whole season. Her coming back helps us with what we can do on our defenders. You’ve got Mia Scranton, who’s been outstanding. Bella Yakel, who’s our captain.
- We’ve been laughing in our podcast that we’ve been creating so many good chances and missing them. In the Texas game, in the first two minutes, one of our players gets in, and it’s her and the goalkeeper and the goal is big as Dallas, and she hits the post. Yakel hits a low-liner. Kaylee Noble backheels a ball across the face of the goal. Trinity Buchanan hits the ball outside of her foot. We make that one. LSU is a team that is not going to give you those looks.
- These players think, “Next one, I’ll get.” We have to sharpen our defense. Maysen Veronda made some key saves in big moments. We’ll take that.
- We won’t get back that late from Baton Rouge. We’ll get back at 4:00 a.m. That’s early, right?
- Yesterday was a day off for the team. We get back to the focus being on us. I will share information with the team about the opponent. Thursday will be about the game plan, and we will head to Louisiana.
