Oh, Mya.
On Tuesday, Texas A&M first baseman Mya Perez was named the Southeastern Conference’s Player of the Week after a ridiculous week at the plate.
In five games this week, Perez hit a mind-boggling .786 (11-for-14), with a trio of long balls, 13 RBIs and three free bases.
In the weekend’s series sweep vs. Loyola Marymount, the sophomore went 6-for-8 and shined in Sunday’s run-rule win with two home runs — the first multi-homer game of her young career.
“That’s Mya,” A&M head coach Trisha Ford said on Sunday. “We just didn’t see that last year. She is that kid. She’s been that kid her whole life. She can mash.
“There are some things Mya did. She got herself in really good shape for her. She came back, and she’s stronger. That kid lifts crazy. She can throw some weight around on that bar. She’s become a collegiate softball player. That’s what happened.”
Last Tuesday, A&M secured its first of four run-rules of the week over Sam Houston when Perez knocked her first grand slam 202 feet out of Davis Diamond.
Against North Texas on Wednesday, the California kid logged her fourth three-hit performance.
In the last 10 games, Perez is slashing .517/.571/1.000. The second-year Aggie continues to lead the team in home runs (10), RBIs (51), OPS (1.433) and slugging percentage (.862).
A young but bright star in Ford’s program, this serves as Perez’s second SEC honor this season, with the first coming after a fantastic weekend in the JoAnne Graf Classic.
