Athletic motivation can be derived from several sources.

There is the revenge motive. There is an arch-rivalry. Perhaps there is a perceived lack of respect or bulletin board material. Of course, there is always a championship quest.

However, one of the strongest motivators can be humiliation. A team that is embarrassed by an opponent one season often comes back with a nasty attitude and a strong desire to settle the score the next season.
