An early offseason so let's jump into it....

If you could change the result of one play in Aggie baseball history what would it be?

Mine would be 4 more feet of flight.....in game 2 of the 2024 CWS final.....bottom of the 9th, 2 outs, down by 3, bases loaded, Targac pinch hitting and flew out to the warning track.

Its literally the scenario every kid plays out in their back yard.....movies could have been made about it.....Warren Morris's statue in Omaha would be replaced with one of Targ.....the senior former All-conference player loses his starting job and literally comes in from the 1st coaching box to grab a bat, step in cold and walk off the whole thing.....with a granny.

Argh!

I think for me it's not sending Bmont home on the play at the plate. He would've been electric in Omaha, granted we would've never seen Kent…

2003 Regional final at Olsen... Matt Farnum toss to first for what should have been the last out of the tournament. Went about 8' or 10' over the head of the first baseman (kid from Cincinnati whose name I can't currently think of). Unlike Omaha, I was there, and I saw it, and it happened in slow motion. Played Cougar High three times that season, and played three of the worst games of the year. The 2003 team was better than the 2004 team (which made it to a super at LSU), but for that throw.

If a little kid's screams and wishes could have sent that ball farther, it would have been out of the park.

If it isn't the play mentioned by slipnslide above, then it is in the 93 series when we were the one seed and lost to the dirtbags.

I literally...not figuratively...almost threw up when this happened. I was sitting about 5 rows up from the dugout on the 3rd base side of Olsen. Had a perfect angle to see the errant throw and we could tell the ball was going to be airmailed the second it left Farnum's hand.

It's too long ago to remember any one play, but whatever might have altered the outcome of one of those two games against LSU in 1989. We win that regional, we go to Omaha with baseball's best record and come home with the title.

This was the one I initially thought of, but Targac up above you might be it for me.

Man, it was like it was drawn up for a movie.

Was listening to Dave South call the game. He was giving out information on how to buy Super Regional tickets the inning before.

This is mine.

I'm still not sure what it was about that run that caused the break, so I'm optimistic that it was a fluke. But I would want BMont for all of the CWS.

a couple of others of note...

in the 1998 regional final (old format) vs. Mississippi State, the Ags jumped on the State starter for 5 runs early. But miscommunication on a squeeze bunt capped the rally at 5. When the Ags might have scored 6 or 7 or 8 runs. And they ended up needing those runs later in the game

the resumed game vs. Arkansas in 2015. This one hurt bad. The Ags won the opener on Friday of parents weekend. Then led 8-3 after 6 innings on Saturday but the game was suspended due to weather.

when it resumed in the top of the 7th...an easy pop-up fell between the SS and CF (again due to miscommunication) and it ignited the Hogs rally. Arky won 9-8 and then won the third game. The series loss likely cost A&M a national seed. And the Ags ended up in Fort Worth for the super

SAC bunt last game vs lsu in '89 (if we bunt, next batter sends us to Omaha….lost in extras)

one clarification on the Farnum bunt play in 2003...

the game went to extra innings with the scored tied at 6

the Ags didn't score in the top of the 10th

in the bottom half...UH got the first 2 runners on base...and then bunted

I forgot that there were already 2 men on base. The Ags were in a bad spot before the bunt

Was sitting 10 rows up in the right field corner at TD Ameritrade 20 yards from where Targac's ball was caught at the wall. It's had been a completely still day but during his AB a slight breeze had started to blow in from RF. No breeze and it's gone. At the time I thought it's cuz we were cursed.. little did I know it was the baseball gods not letting POS add a natty to his resume with the **** he was pulling behind the scenes

For a single play it has to be this and it's not even close. This was one play to win it all. Any other play mentioned would have extended a season but you don't know how it would have ended.

Targac gets a little more distance and they win it all. Nothing else needed to happen. I forgot, or suppressed, how close he came to winning that.

K-Man's daughter had PTSD over this play. At least a couple times in the following seasons when a pitcher would lob a ball over to first on a comebacker to the mound she would gasp or visibly flinch.

My one play would be that Kirk Thompson would have been a half a step faster against LSU in '89. Win or lose after that I could live with but having that season end on a bang bang play still haunts.
