I saw where Zach and Rylan are listed as probable for game today. Does anyone know the genesis and purpose of doing injury reports. If a coach reports a player is out, then something changes, can the player play? These reports and designations seem arbitrary to me and serve no real purpose.

This article does a good job of explaining the purpose of the injury report.

Gambling. Not publishing an injury report would lead to wild profits and losses through insider trading. If you know a team is unlikely to have their starting center, for example, that's going to impact your decision on wagering.

Pretty sure this initially started with the NFL, as a lot of the original owners had casino/racetrack/gambling backgrounds.

I think the Big Ten fined USC for playing someone listed as out in football
