Hard getting past a particular pet peeve- this turnover:

We have been really good at NOT doing this- in my view, maybe the worst kind of turnover in basketball:

when you secure a D rebound, and the other team lets you have it and turns to run, so there is no pressure or urgency. But then you make a thoughtless careless pass to a guard when you are NOT on a fast break.

Instead of holding it and waiting a second or two for traffic to clear. The most unforced of errors.

That turnover by u-know-who that resulted in a lay in for Mizzou at a critical time was the single biggest killer last night.

So much physical potential but really lazy execution seems to be the m.o. for y/k/w dammit!

was that when we got to within 3 and then immediately went back to 5 and killed our MO

yep, it was at the 8:30 mark when we cut their 6pt lead to 4, then got rebound on their miss. Mizz lays in our perfect "assist pass" to go up 6.

i immediately thought- " we BETTER not lise this game by1 !

Yeah… always tough when you can point to unforced errors like that in close margin losses. We had a couple additional instances where we had makable looks at the rim and just didn't find the bottom of the net.

Oftentimes the difference between he winners and the losers in close games are plays like that or missed free throws or missed layups down the stretch

We had all of them last night

We still scored 1.35 points per possession last night. Anything pointing at offensive mistakes is just missing the mark.

We shouldn't have to be absolutely perfect on offense.

We got outscored in the paint 56-28, second chance points were 14-2, and even though both teams had the same number of turnovers they outscored us in points off turnovers by 5 and fast break points 13-0.

Our defense, which has been very good overall, was just awful the last two games. We're going to find out if that's a matchup specific problem or if teams have figured out something about us.

If Griffen drains that three pointer from the top of the key, then that's likely the dagger. Was so close to going in.

I dont' think we've done this that much.

Absolutely

Rebounding and defense killed us a d us the heart of why we lost

Was just pointing out that when games are close, the team that plays more fundamentally sound down the stretch usually wins

Hard to fix a lack of height, but the lack of TOs generated is a big concern.

Yeah, especially if it doesn't come with a tradeoff somewhere else. Like maybe we're going to be less aggressive because we want to stay in front better and keep teams out of the paint, but we didn't do that either.

How many leads have we completely choked away at the end, 4?

SMU
Tennessee
Bama
Missouri

Couldn't pull one of them off?

Pulled out Texas, Auburn and LSU. But yea.

Yeah but if you ignore the ones we pulled off we haven't pulled off any!

I think the solution here is pretty clear, we should just go back to blowing everyone out. Someone email that to Bucky.

Ok. You make a solid argument. Blow outs it is.

Hence not having a big alpha dog guard who can go to the rack. Blowouts it is

Not really. I don't expect a bunch of comparative midgets to force a lot of turnovers against guys who can see right over their heads

At this stage of the season playing this kind tempo might be wearing them down a bit.

I don't really think this is it physically, maybe some mentally.

The thing is almost every team goes through some kind of funk at some point. Question is how fast can you work your way out of it and how bad do you let it get.

I think our issue is mostly defense and it's tough when you can't match up physically down low (with only 1 player).

I think the single biggest disappointment of the season (other than losing Mbako) is the failure of Federiko Federiko to develop further.

He seems so much weaker and less effective than last year at Tech (yeah, i know this is a different system).

I was so excited when he came here. and figured we would have an portant defensive presence when needed.

nope.

I think our issue lately has been less about matching up down low, we've done a pretty good job this season navigating around that problem. The issue lately is that we're just letting guards go wherever they want. If we have to help on driving guards we're absolutely toast.

The particular turnover referenced by OP was pretty bad and so unnecessary but just about any one mistake we made in that game would have been the difference between a W and an L.

Vinson is playing better overall and we need him to against bigger opponents . He and Agee are basically it in the paint excepting the occasional guard blow by to the rim and the even less frequent post up by Clemence.

Mizzou only played 7 guys and 3 played 33 mins + with Mitchell at 38 mins. It's a testament to them that they didn't wear down

Totally agree with Divining Rod that the empty roster spot that Federiko has turned into has been a huge disappointment
