Caruso is also a perfect example of how someone can make a career in the league by finding an important thing that no one else is willing to do and then being elite at that thing.
He is a monster at deflections, mostly due to his effort and BBIQ and he just makes himself into a disruptive force when he's on the court that positively impacts winning. The 3 point shooting is a huge bonus, but he makes 20 million dollars a year because he creates chaos defensively.

Castle is no where close to being set, and is moving/lunging towards AC. Castle is a couple inches bigger, and 25 pounds heavier...
Castle looks more like a fullback in that clip than a guy trying to set a screen.

A defender doesn't have to be set if the offensive player lunges, lowers shoulder and/or extends their arm, which Castle clearly does in that clip.

He never established a legal guarding position to draw the foul.
Again, he doesn't have to establish a legal guarding position if the offensive player "setting a screen" lowers his shoulder, extends his arm, or lunges at him.

One of my favorite internet fan things is disingenuous arguing.
As someone with no dog in this series, It's very obvious what's happening in that clip. Caruso can see that Castle doesn't see him or expect him to charge the ball, so he's going to run towards the ball and force the contact and by the time Castle sees him there's nothing he can do, partially because the angle Caruso takes isn't directly toward the ball, he intentionally gets to Castle as quickly as possible. Caruso exaggerates the contact, he even kind of shuffles his left foot a bit so he can look like he took most of the force of the impact rather than deliver it.
So it is all of those things. It's a set up by Caruso, but Castle does commit the foul, Caruso does flop to exaggerate the contact, but it is an offensive foul. When you're playing a team that you KNOW plays this way, Castle has to be more aware of his positioning and where Caruso is.
For me that's fairly safely on the "smart but annoying basketball" side of the line compared to just outright flopping, and "smart but annoying" is basically Caruso's entire brand of basketball and it's made him rich as hell.

Classic veteran basketball stuff. I doubt anyone here was mad about all the cheap fouls Taylor used to draw. He was a master of the cheap foul.

Yeah, it's 100% not an angle of pursuit he would take in a regular season game and he would have avoided the contact. But in the playoffs and in the context of this series, he took a weird angle and forced the contact.
To me, a situation like that is a no call because it's clearly someone just seeking out contact for the sake of the contact.

I won't pretend to know the NBA's replay rules but live, at court level, and especially assuming the official is primarily looking at the player with the ball I imagine the defender gets that call like 95 times out of 100.

Caruso may play like a b* sometimes, but he's at least a hustle/grit role player who should play that way. Shai has all of the talent in the world and doesn't need to do half the stuff he does.

Like all the Steve Blake and Manu Ginobli comparisons, we have to sort athletes into color-coded bins to compare them. Ridiculous.
Even scouts make this mistake. Caruso had off-the charts athleticism. So did Dan Majerle, Tom Chambers, and Rex Chapman. And Ryan Swope. In Swope's case, I heard one scout saying they didn't realize how fast he was until they went back and looked at film. How embarrassing for that scout. Teddy Bridgewater and Byron Leftwich were great dual-threat QBs...right? I mean they must be.

He flopped more this year though, firmly moved into annoying as a result
