Is there some kind of regulation that requires all fans to use these awful remotes now? I'm having a hard time finding something that suits my application - anyone have suggestions?

- light + fan
- compatible with 2 separate switches for independent light / fan control
- quiet enough for a bedroom

You should be able to remove the remote receiver from any fan and hard wire the fan to be controlled by the switch.

A significant number of the fans now don't have a physical switch to change the direction - everything is built into the remote. I went through the same issues replacing fans in my last house, especially because I was using smart wall switches for control.

New house has a remote mounted in every room and I just haven't spent the energy to try to start swapping them out yet.

Stick to a pull chain fan, then you have no problems wiring to wall switches. Minka Aire and Hunter still make a large number of models in that flavor. Alternatively, you can make due with Harbor Breeze type fans and just remove the control module. You'll loose the speed control and dimming abilities, but if you're ok with that, that is an option as well.

Everyone is just on the home automation band wagon to make it all remote and smart operated. I'm not a fan (no pun intended) of the integrated LED lighting either and much prefer a bulb option so you're not replacing a light kit or the entire fan if that LED bites the dust.

New homeowner here--we have replaced every ceiling fan in our home in the last 1.5 years, and Hunter and Minka are the only ones we could find that have no remote as well.

New home build a few years ago and the wife wanted no pull cords, and we went with Hunter (no remote) wall controlled on our back porch.

We put two on the same switch and when I asked the electricians later why we couldn't put a 'dimmer', oh yeah they don't make a switch for that much amperage. That would have been useful information since they are in permanent high-speed mode.

One already locked up so need to find a pull-string exterior pair of fans. Most of the other wall controllable fans inside with dimmer switches aren't working right either so I guess the switches are junk.

I don't want to deal with lost remotes and grandkids.

Any suggestions?
I don't think you know me.

You cannot use a reostat type dimmer, they will cause noise and other issues. You can use a switch designed for fans that controls speed. Should be readily available.

Out of curiosity, why the hate on remotes? I have several in the house and they all work pretty flawlessly.

I thought I had researched it without luck but will check into that, thank you. The porch switch is a single rectangle type, in the middle of a triple wall plate(all rectangle). I'm also trying to keep away from any sheetrock work, etc so it obviously would need to match somewhat.

I don't hate remotes necessarily, but with several young'uns running around wrecking shop, I absolutely hate having to find the lost remotes when I need them. I know it will happen.

Very valid point. There are some where the remote actually installs into the wall box. Sometimes it isn't even wired, you tie the wires to go up to the fan before installing the remote. Sometimes also have their own wired switch.

There are some easy options available

Minka air is the best. We had them on our porch at our last house. You could crank them up to almost blow kids off the porch.

^Was going to ask what the best porch fan is. Our Hunter is about 18 years old and doesn't give enough air flow anymore.

I agree the choices are slim if you don't want the remote. but others have said you can wire some models without the remote receiver.

My preferred option is an AC motor fan and Lutron fan control which I have in all our bedrooms.

Lutron fan control requires an AC motor fan and neutral wire in the gangbox (no DC motor fan, which is what most of the fancy ones with required remotes are). but it gives you three speeds from the remote. and you can add infinite pico remotes if you want to control from another location or wirelessly.

Also by going this route, for those that don't like pull chains, just don't assemble the chain. I removed all but the nub coming out of the fan (about an inch) and you can't even tell its a pull chain fan.
