The last 3 we have bought in the last 2 years have crapped out on us. We spent $300+ on a battery Shark and over $500 on a corded one… both don't work. Tried everything re: cleaning the devices to no avail. Doing basic hardwoods and carpets.

Anyone got one they love?

These last forever & suck the chrome off a trailer hitch but
the roller brush needs replacement often, else gets too heavy for a wife to push (no self-propulsion)
  • Riccar - a past love
  • 2015 Jul Miele S7580Tango still kicking
Others will have to post central vacs recs, if that's the subject

Update: Consumer Reports testing All Types of vacs gave highest score of 85 to
Shark PowerDetect HZ4002 - a corded stick vac
That said, CR often rates tangent features higher than the appliance's purpose, e.g.
giving "quiet" a very high weight in rating Dishwashers over "best cleaning".
But that's how they think in Yonkers, NY

We are going on year seven with a corded Shark 322 (the successor to which appears to be the LA301) and it's been great. Which corded Shark model do you have?

We use a Henry, but pretty much only use it on tile floors (whole house) and for de-dusting. Don't really know if the carpet cleaner attachment works that great or not as we don't have carpet. I also use it to clean a microfiber covered gaming table with a brush attachment - its got some serious suck.

If you are one of those that like quality and repairability over fancy marketing and features you don't need take a look at one. They are so small they would make a great secondary cleaner as well.

We've had a few Dyson sticks and are very over them. Looking for a new one as well. They're convenient and cordless, but struggle to get things up on a first pass if the item is larger than dust and end up pushing things around quite a bit. Also, if you have pets, the hole between the stick and the canister is pretty small and gets clogged often.

Miele. Had for over 12 years no problems at all. Expensive up front but well made.

This one works pretty well, but isn't for sale. Also has an occasional exhaust issue.

We've had a Carpet Pro since we moved into this house in the late 2000s and had mostly carpet installed. The vac is great but it has bags (not terrible but I've ran out a time or two and it just doesn't work when the bag is anywhere near full). Plus, the unit is, well, useless on bare floors.

So, last year, I finally got a Shark NV352 based, in large part, on pro reviews of those doing residential house cleaning. Having 2 vacs is not something most people would want -- and the Shark is better on carpet than my CP is on floors; in fact, WAY better -- but we've got everything covered. This Shark is better than I could have expected. I used it on an area with engineered hardwood, something I rarely vacced, just mopped with that Boni-whatever. When I was done I walked on it barefoot and it felt like it had been mopped.

For those with bare floors and area rugs, or maybe one or two bedrooms with carpets, I don't think you could go wrong with this Shark.

I went from a Dyson Ball, great suction, but not heavy enough to "brush" the carpet, to my mother's old Hoover Windtunnel (extremely heavy - self propelled) to a Miele.

The Dyson was very cheap plastic. The Hoover was very stout plastic. The Miele is the only one that doesn't "feel" cheap when you're using it. If/when this one dies, I'll happily buy another.

What kind of Miele? I see the canisters get a lot of love online but are they cumbersome?

Miele Dynamic U1 Jazz Upright.

Looking at the Miele website, there isn't an upright vacuum that isn't a stick vacuum in their product line anymore.

We've had a miele canister for 10+yrs and its been great. Our home is 100+yrs old with wood floors. I can't find the exact model but it looks something like the Guard M1. We have a excellent vacuum store here in Fort Worth called Evans vacuums and their mechanics absolutely love Miele. The canister is not cumbersome. It glides across the floor with ease. Tons of suction.
