Annual service confirmed a refrigerant leak in a 13-year old Goodman system. Getting a quote for a coil replacement but more looking at a full replacement due to overall age and having to put bandaids on the compressor the past two years - fan motor replacement, hard start kit, & a capacitor.

It's a 5-ton unit in BCS - thoughts on considering a two-stage? Seems like everyone that puts one of these in ultimately likes it and feels like it makes a difference overall in terms of performance and cost. Also leaning towards a Bryant unit FWIW.

Two stage is worth it IMO due to better humidity control and more time spent in the target temperature range. I'd go with Trane or American Standard.

Were you happy with the single stage before ?

5 ton unit ?

Single story ?

What sq ft ? 2500 ?

In my field experience i see more problems and higher repair cost on variable and 2 stage systems

Also please do not buy another Goodman regardless of how cheap it is

Don't know any different than single stage. Confirmed 2500 sf and single story. House faces Southwest. The current units starts, runs for less than 10 minutes, then repeats about 10 mins later. Right now with it being cooler outside, it only runs for about 4 mins before hitting temp and shutting off. That's probably my biggest frustration is that it seems oversized.

No plans for another Goodman. Came with the house but have to give it credit for making it 13 years.

but we have evidence of a 13 year life span. I get there is a lot of Goodman hate, but 13 years on an oversized system that is shutting on/off more frequently seems like it worked out pretty well.

Goodman is a piece of ****, especially with a poor install.

13 years is nothing to brag about with HVAC. I've seen 50 year old condensers still chugging along.

I replaced my old system at 25 years, probably could have gotten another decade with some repairs, but in 25 years I only changed on condenser fan motor. The OP has done more than that already in half the time. Big factor in changing was better efficiency.
