We are currently renovating a 1968 single story home and had to completely remove the existing wood burning fireplace and chimney. We would like to build back a fireplace with a ventless or vented gas fireplace (no more brick chimney through the roof, but could do a vent through the roof if needed). The GC recommended we go with a ventless fireplace. Anyone have experience with a ventless gas fireplace? From what I've read, ventless might become a problem in a spay foam insulated house but our house will not have spray foam insulation, so should not be an issue with that regard. Any other considerations I should be aware of? Any fireplace insert recommendations (ventless or vented)? Thanks

FWIW, you can do a wood burning and just have the metal flue out the roof. You don't have to have the brick chimney in most cases.

We have wood or gas. Thought I'd convert it to wood but have really enjoyed the gas setup for the ease of it. I have it lit if it's under 60 outside.

We had a ventless gas fireplace in our first house for about 15 years. We eventually switched it out for a vented version because of air quality concerns and I was tired of cleaning yellow film off the windows and assorted surfaces. Ventless do put out a lot of heat, and are very efficient, but I really prefer vented for air-quality peace of mind.

Go to the fireplace guru store & speak to the Owner and display your GC's 411 or discount card.
Ask for ventless fire options, explain you will always vent when in use.
If you have plans or if he will visit the attic, he will tell how many 90d turns & distances might be required to vent a) out the wall/gable or b) rear roof/etc.
Tell him you don't want the cheap gas logs, ever ... longest warranty so they will come back to replace the guts (SOP) at reasonble price & timeline.
Insure you have a combustion air supply route in this design.

Never no-vent Any gas fire
