My Experience with a Goodman A/C System

So, the summer of 2021 I had my old Amana system replaced by Cool Guys A/C because they were highly recommended on here. After talking with their salesman, I was sold a two-stage Goodman system. It was installed and worked well until the following May. I know that it wasn't the best unit but I was told it was still a quality system.

A tech came out and decided I needed to have all of my copper tubing replaced. That seems weird since usually that only happens if a new roof is put on our some work is done on your house. I verified that with a number of other companies in the area. The tech quoted my around $800 dollars for the work. Two days later I got a quote through email for $3,000+. No phone call. No explanation. I called and was told the tech had the wrong book and misquoted. Maybe but I didn't get an apology from the son of the owner.

I eventually went with another company after that experience and the probable misdiagnosis of the issue.

The current company I use first figured out that the system was not wired appropriately. Not only that, I can't get my air filter into the system without bending it considerably because they placed it in a spot right in front of a gas line. Anyway, no Freon was leaking. The wiring fix worked. Thankfully I didn't drop 3,000 grand on the copper tubing being replaced.

Since that time, I've had nothing but issues with the Goodman system. Eventually the system almost froze up due to a cheap part that cracked. A month ago the control board had to be replaced and now the condenser won't turn on.

My family and friends use the current company and have had systems replaced and had no issues. I know that I didn't buy top of the line but I was convinced that Goodman was a reliable product. I have not found that to be accurate.

I'm venting a little bit here but I also want to make sure everyone does a better job of due diligence than I did. I know many people have had a better experience than I have with this company, so maybe I got them in a bad day or a tech that didn't last long around their shop.

YIKES and can't trump that card but can come close .....

Aggieland homes think Goodman is for tract/spec houses but many defend them to the death ... go figure.
So sorry. A 2-stage should be middle of the road and many AC company Owners opt for the 2 vs the variable.
All will say that the installer is the 2nd half QB that wins the game and this you report was missing or the job called for shoehorning IDK so a lot of the problem.

Fire this QB.
Hire a Trane or Am.Std (says Consumer Reports) next time and if your house had a custom builder, I would get him involved with his guys on anything such as this, ever again. A+ homebulders are worth their weight in gold and low BP, longer life, fewer regets.

Pray that the new 2nd half QB can make Goodman pamper you for 20 years! Maybe the bad times are over and on to new things that break at dawn hopefully, not at 3am.

Good report, thanks for sharing and adding data to advice to others seeking guidance.

Cheap is cheap for a reason

On hvac buy once cry once

On a "good" goodman system you will be lucky to get 10-12 years before compressor fails or the coil leaks

Anyone have experience with Tempstar?

As per Consumer Reports "reliability"
Goodman rated 50/100, not in their green area = good
Tempstar rated below Goodman

have friend who owns AC co. He gives me brother in law pricing on everything he does.

I have had Goodman since 2016 and had I think a capacitor fail 2x. My downstairs unit is a Tempstar installed 2 years ago - again no issues.

I've paid a total of $14k for 2 inside/outside replacements (3 ton and a 3.5 ton). I was quoted years ago for an inside/outside replacement for no less than 21k by a larger company.

We are moving in < 3 years, hence my decision. YMMV

I've seen Goodman furnaces look like a banana when hung horizontally. The cabinet is so thin it can support the unit when horizontal. When I worked for Lennox, we didn't worry about our units bending like that.

I replaced my system last year with a Lennox. If I didn't go Lennox, I would have gone with Trane or American Standard (the only difference between the 2 is the name, even the model numbers are identical).

Thoughts on Carrier these days?

Carrier 1980-1999 installed by raquetball buddy expert
Carrier 1999-2021 installed by the top guys in Aggieland
Trane 2021 installed by The Guy, all time guru and friend

Even though I have loads of Pros & loves to list about Carrier materials, they just don't hold up EVEN IF the best in town installers/maintenance are caretakers. The last one's repairs cost 70% of the 1999 replacement install that used the 1980 metal ducts, even AeroSealed them tight.

Shall I post the latest Consumer Reports ratings, not that every bullet point they rate is weighted appropos .... e.g. when rating DWs, "Cleaning" is not the #1 priority! I think "noise" was .... sigh.

I also have worked for Trane and Lennox and know the quality of their development process, the great lab facilities they have and the diligence they put into the products they build. They're doing it right. and we knew at one point companies like janitrol and Goodman didn't have those kinds of labs, but we're building copies of the better brands using third-party compressors that are common across the industry. While a units design can be copied at some level, in many ways the real magic is often not visible to the naked eye. Things like airflow design, electronics and circuitry design require a high level of tuning and testing to get everything out of the product.

And these split systems are very complex and highly dependent on a quality installation,

I definitely should have done more research but I had too much faith in the people selling me the system. My mistake and I won't be making it again.

A hard start was added to the system and everything seems good for now.

We had Carrier Infinity heat pump systems for about 12 years. Had the hardest time finding people that could work on them. One of them finally died and the replacement parts were simply not available. I ended up replacing them with Goodman systems and have lived to really, really regret that decision.

We have two systems. One works perfectly. The other requires a call to the company that installed them just about every time we have to switch between heat and cool. When we need AC it will blow warm air (most recent issue that has been repeated many times). When it's cold it will circulate the air but not blow heat (the compressor won't engage - also repeated many times) which happened with the last cold snap. These systems are three years old and I swear we've had to call them out 25 times. They've added coolant. They've removed coolant. They rewired them. They bypassed the control boards. It's just constant and incredibly frustrating.

I WILL NEVER OWN A GOODMAN SYSTEM AGAIN!

The problem with heating and cooling is them always go out when it's really hot or cold out. And you invariably feel pressured to get it fixed right away. Never again. I will eventually find a heating and cooling company in the Austin area that I can trust and that installs Trane systems. When these Goodmans die (probably sooner than later) I will replace them with Trane systems.

I had Trane heat pumps in my last house for 31 yrs and hated them. Had one unit for downstairs and one for upstairs. The coils in the air handler would start rusting and then zi would have to replace the whole unit. One of the units lasted 12 years, otherwise, the other units only lasted around 7 years.

The other problem was the heat pump never heated the house very well, nor cooled the house very well. It was hard to cool the house below 78 degrees.

When we bought our most recent house, we got one with a gas furnace. The house had a Bryant AC/furnance that has been great. It is 15 years old and still going strong. I would consider Bryant again when it is time to replace the system

Replacing a Goodman next month. Goodman installed in 2007 when the house was built. I hope the Trane we are getting will get close to that longevity.
