Looking for some engineering support on a home addition to certify the foundation that needs to be poured and the structural framing for the extension. We are essentially trying to kick out the gable end of our master bedroom, so continuing the roof design, but just extending it out.

Maybe I am a bit out of touch but I had a firm quote me a roughly $1.5k just to come out and look at the house, and then another $2K minimum for the engineering.

I have my soil samples, current blue prints and concrete samples from when the house was built. I was hoping this would help with the cost a bit? Located in Montgomery County if that helps.

Also, serving Aggieland is Dudley Eng who always gets an A+ & replaced the honorable & genius Prof. Skip Coody, P.E. RIP https://dudleyeng.com/

Only a phone call will tell if either service your area and that small a proeject if not serving a larger one there same time.

If left to a DiY search,
Please post any referrals/details after the services, as we have a new 6000sf house design in progress for your area and will also need to find a foundation engineer.

if you can go back to whoever did the original engineering for your house, you may have better luck. Liability for engineers using customer supplied data may be too much to risk.

I did that first, the main guy is retiring at the end of this month and the company will shut down. They are not accepting any new work.

You likely need to find a structural engineer who is working mostly on their own. Most firms probably will charge you a premium for a small job.

How would I find them? Not trying to be snarky or anything, legitimately have been googling and what not and have not had much luck.

So if Dudley nor MLAW are interested and Texas Board of Engineers are not helpful on-line nor by telephone, Google gives dead ends ... also where in the county would help your co-searchers.

Most Structural Engineers locally are stiffarming residential framing designs and certainly not designs by others

The ones we have used - past & present - did not accept soil reports from anyone but from their own referrals; this policy is akin to hospitals and lab reports, esp. in cases of rare diseases, so hard to criticize

1. Home Advisor search might produce some callers that will need a fine tooth comb of their credentials but will need your address & email to bother you later if they get any nibbles.
2. Turning this job over to a 5-star home builder with Owner review of the engineering would make this more simple & carefree.

Your new framing reads like a no brainer, slam dunk unless there's more to know so EZ for any framer sans engineer looking over shoulder.
Any good soils report will include a suggest foundation type with specs but not a final design - by others. You might review the builder's suggestions for completing this.

Lastly, you can send any results to us or an Architect or Engineer friend for a gratis review and opinons/directions to consider - what's next. That said, you get what you pay for!

In Aggieland, a total Struct.eng services contract from soil borings/report-design-inspections might be ~$1.22/TotalSF + travel time if long distance. Only you know the SF.
