I think solo stoves are ok, but not for me. I like a lower profile wrought iron fire pit where I can see the coals & burning logs... not just the flames out of the top. Sit in a chair a few feet away from a solo stove and all you see is tips of flames. You also don't get that pleasant burn of a too-hot fire when things flare up.... this makes you feel alive & appreciate the power Prometheus seized for us. It's primal.
I also like to actively tend a fire. I keep an old fireplace poker by my outside fire pit & I constantly push logs around to get the fire "just right". Sometimes I'll hit a log just to watch the sparks fly.
When guests are around, I am able to low-key assert my dominance over others around the fire because I have the poker & don't let anyone else touch it. People instinctively fear a man brandishing such a tool. The poker makes a good prop for stories, and I can also gesture at people and shoo my dog away with it.
A solo stove fire can't be tended with a poker in such a manner, you must use tongs to handle the logs to avoid damaging the fine brushed steel finish. No man ever feared another man holding OXO tongs around a fire pit. Doing something like that makes you
less manly, and you may actually get your ass kicked on principle for doing such a thing around some campfires where men are present, especially when alcohol is involved.
