What's the consensus on these? See a fair amount available on Marketplace for about half of retail.

Would primarily want it for the "smokeless" feature. Would be used in a large covered patio area, so not going to leave out directly in the elements.

No concerns with mine. Love it, easy to use

Have one and enjoy it.

At the end of the day it's still burning wood. Because of the design it's a cleaner burn so you don't have the thick smoke. But you'll still have smoke if under a covered patio, IMO....

it will burn cleaner if you keep the wood below the top lip. that generally means cutting your logs a bit shorter than standard. but, I do like mine.

We have one as well. Like others have said, fire gets going quick, goes through wood quicker. If you keep the wood below the top, you get less smoke. Doesn't put off a lot of heat, which makes it ok for winters in Houston. We got it to just have small fires on the patio while watching games in the fall/winter and making smokes with the kids. It's perfect for that.

They have a heat deflector to help with that.

No personal experience, though. Like you I'm in Houston so not a huge issue.

Thanks, I can always see how it goes. Patio has vaulted ceilings, likely between 15-20' tall in the middle where this would be sitting under.

Thanks, that is what the intent would be as well.

Perhaps down the road if a second hand Solo gets a good amount of use!

If you want one for warmth, I wouldn't recommend unless you buy / diy a heat deflector. Without it, you're burning a lot of wood, and most of the heat rises up.

I think solo stoves are ok, but not for me. I like a lower profile wrought iron fire pit where I can see the coals & burning logs... not just the flames out of the top. Sit in a chair a few feet away from a solo stove and all you see is tips of flames. You also don't get that pleasant burn of a too-hot fire when things flare up.... this makes you feel alive & appreciate the power Prometheus seized for us. It's primal.

I also like to actively tend a fire. I keep an old fireplace poker by my outside fire pit & I constantly push logs around to get the fire "just right". Sometimes I'll hit a log just to watch the sparks fly.

When guests are around, I am able to low-key assert my dominance over others around the fire because I have the poker & don't let anyone else touch it. People instinctively fear a man brandishing such a tool. The poker makes a good prop for stories, and I can also gesture at people and shoo my dog away with it.

A solo stove fire can't be tended with a poker in such a manner, you must use tongs to handle the logs to avoid damaging the fine brushed steel finish. No man ever feared another man holding OXO tongs around a fire pit. Doing something like that makes you less manly, and you may actually get your ass kicked on principle for doing such a thing around some campfires where men are present, especially when alcohol is involved.

Have a solo stove mesa (smallest version they have) that a vendor sent. It works pretty well and I'm really happy with it. Really enjoy doing marshmallows on it with the kids. It burns really well and surprisingly clean. Pretty sure their larger ones would be no different.

I got a muskoska or whatever the knock off walmart version is. On clearance at end of season, think I paid $70. Beats the $300 or whatever for a solo stove.

I like ours overall.

The heat deflector makes a difference, but I am frustrated by the way the legs attach - they fall off a lot.

Has held up pretty well - had it 4 years I think. Stays outside covered through summer.

Not completely smokeless, but pretty much if you follow the rules like not overloading and keeping the wood lower than the top.

Aside from maybe longevity, I wouldn't hesitate to try a cheaper knockoff brand.

Saw one of these at a customers house a couple of weeks ago. Definitely a budget buster but it looked really cool.

It's called the cowboy cauldron
