We are purchasing an existing home and my wife wants the master closet redone to include drawers and shoe cubbies. Who would be best at designing and building this so that we know things will fit and work? All the closet companies (California Closets) have online tools but you are kind of on your own. Also, is it cheaper to have a carpenter build rather than use a closet company?

Kent Moore cabinets/equal or better (Aggieland) WILL DO a better job with less than these high advertising "award winning" designs that all costs fees to promote, rather than cater to your lifestyle & contents that need housing in EZ to store/access ways.

You would use an architect or interior designer licenced but someone with the time & forte to measure ALL/What/How-to store access would be an interior organizer like Angelika Hoepfl if not yourself ... to feed a cabinetmaker to ensure a superior product.

The fun part would be selecting the materials/finishes while the drawings were in progress.
Ask to see 3Ds of the designs before production.

We had ikea plan and build ours in round rock and were super happy.

What's your location? The guy that is finishing up all cabinets and closets in our house is out of Milano. He does excellent work and was substantially less than other contractors. I think he's a one-man shop, so is communication is great, but the product is excellent.
