Dishwasher is toast and of course we're headed out of town tomorrow morning. Hoping to have something ordered before we head out but no clue what features are out there these days. Figured step 1 was coming here.

What's must have these days? Anything to avoid? Brands? With two young kids the dishwasher is our most used appliance. In fact I entirely blame this on my husband for just a couple weeks ago praising the damn thing as household mvp for how hard it works and never giving us problems. Sigh.

If I was going to buy a dishwasher today, I'd probably go with a Bosch. We had one at our last house and it was very quiet and cleaned well. They're pretty universally acclaimed.

We have a Whirlpool now that was in our current home when we bought it. It's not a bad unit, but not as quiet. But we've run it with 5 kids and its over a decade old, so I can't knock its quality. We're running once or more per day regularly.

Typically the top recommendations are Bosch or Kitchenaid. My wife and I have a Kitchenaid which came with our house which we have been really impressed with, it is a 2018 model. If you go with Bosch, get the 800 Series as the lower-end models do not have a heating element.

The outgoing kitchen aid had a solid 11 year run. It was crazy quiet which is easy to take for granted. Thanks for the reminder. We definitely use heated drying so good to know that's not necessarily standard.

I was in a similar situation as you about a year ago & after researching I went with Bosch. So far so good, & like others have said it is really quiet. Get the 800 series/model.

We've only had it 2.5 years, but we have been pleased with our Bosch 800 series. Very quiet and gets things clean & dry (without melting plastics).

If you go Bosch, don't go low-end.

We got a low-end Bosch and I was disappointed and we didn't keep it for long. Sure, it was quiet, but my impression (just going on my recollection) was:
  • Smaller overall capacity (due to the extra sound insulation around the tub)
  • Tines were too short and IIRC were identical for all of each rack. Plates and glasses wouldn't stay upright very well.
  • Wheels on the bottom rack were too small, so the rack was prone to getting off track unless you were very careful.
  • Something I remember not liking about the silverware container, but I don't recall.
I posted those comments on Bosch's site for that model, saying that the execution (manufacture) of the dishwasher was 1st rate, but the design was lacking. My post was deleted by the next day.

Probably going with the Bosch and picking up today. We were really torn between KitchenAid and Bosch as they have different features that we like and different pros and cons. We wish we could blend them together but ultimately the contained heating element in the Bosch is what pushed us that way. We've had many a medicine cup or other small thing fall and melt, as well as kids bento boxes warping due to the heat and those things are $$$ to replace. Will put hands on the kitchenaid just to make sure but it's not available for pickup so it would need to overcome that.

Thanks everyone!

I qualify the below with
  • Cleaning is everything, noise concerns are none, even in this open plan house
  • In a war, each country's factories turn to making their own war products/supplies from tanks, planes, etc. - granted, a small prejudice and ironic we now buy som much from Nam these days
  • Life doesn't seem to matter as to brand in these last 5 decades with local, sodium soft water
Bosch
  • Consumer Reports likes most models BUT top o line series 800 is NINETEENTH down the list or WHO CLEANS best = Why we buy a Dish WASHER ... and this is VERY true with ours, from 5yo-11yo, running every other day ..... and when fully loaded ... many have to go again or be hand washed!
  • Mechanical German motor/etc of course last a long time, problem free
  • Interior rack German design rates for loading/cleaning & for rusting out prematurely ... a deal breaker
  • EZ to buy most anywhere, some sort of model
  • THE ONLY DW that covertly leaked over TWO rooms since 1980!!!
KitchenAid
  • Consumer Reports like some models
  • Our frequent useage reports same quality of guts as Bosch
  • Interior rack Amercian design rated tops for loading/cleaning and looong life, e.g. some components used in the Bosch = twice the life as of today
  • All other KA appliances have been as bulletproof as the old Hotpoint (GE) die-hards since the 70s
  • You must use time wisely to get the best at ideal price
LG
  • Their clothes washers have out done even Whirlpool Duets or better
  • Consumer Reports are rating their Cleaning as tops as KitchenAid
  • One model bunches all utensils in center of wash wand (extra clean potential)
  • @ local Best Buy deliver/install/dump old services
  • Interior racks similar to KA, so temping, very tempting ..... mmmm
Others are just placeholders until "someday"

Never buy any DW with the "toy" food grinder in the drain ... always the filter. Many DW designers found out the hard way and land fills harbor perfectly good DWs cast away only because that toy broke IMHO

Our previous house had a KitchenAid that we bought and our current house has a Samsung that it came with.

I would take the KitchenAid back in a heartbeat. While bottom rack things melting is something you have to be wary of, we just got in the habit of running it every night, full or not, and that kept us from having a stack of plastic containers, cups, etc. in the sink. The KitchenAid had an option for top rack wash only, but I honestly don't give a **** if I use an extra 2 gallons of water or 2 kWh of electricity. I want the dishes clean and dry.

The Samsung doesn't have a heating element, which means everything comes out wet, even if items are strategically positioned to not hold/catch water.

The old dishwasher we had before the KitchenAid was ancient, so it was loud as hell. I feel like any new dishwasher now, save maybe the bargain basement models, will be plenty quiet. In fact, I want it to make a tad bit of sound (or have some other indicator) so I know when it's running and don't open it mid-cycle.

Highest end Bosch or highest end KA.

Only two options really.

We have a Kitchenaid in our current house and had a Bosch 800 in our old house. The Bosch felt more premium, the Kitchenaid was better at drying, but the cleaning results are pretty similar for both.

New home and bought all KitchenAid in 2016. KitchenAid dishwasher died in 5 years, stovetop in 4 years, and refrigerator in 3 years. I have a Frigidaire refrigerator and freezer in the utility room over 15 years old. I replaced my kitchen with Frigidaire and having good results again.

We bought a kitchenaid about 8yrs ago based on a recommendation from a former customer of mine that owns a higher end appliance repair company in dfw. He only recommended kitchenaid, whirlpool, maytag, and other higher end appliances. It was great the first few years but slowly went down hill. First the top rack started to peel and rust. Then the bottom rack wheels broke so I replaced those with what I thought was a better version. The bottom rack would come off the track daily. Then we noticed that the dishes on the top rack were not getting clean. I replaced the diverter valve/motor and thought that fixed it but it didn't.
Based on all the recommendations on texags and consumer reports (my mom) we bought the Bosch 800 and have been very pleased.

So I'm just sharing this for everyone,

That model is about $500 at a high price, the KDTM704KPS is $1,500

About the same price as the Bosch 800.

HUGE different in components.

We had a Bosch in our previous house, Kitchenaid in our current house. Sound levels are about the same. KA is a little slower, but it washes better, rinses better, and dries way better.

Don't buy a Maytag. Total garbage. I have a 6mo old one where the "stainless steel" front panel is rusting about the vent. There is also a buzz (sounds like bad solenoid). They won't fix either issue under warranty.

Plot twist. We ended up going for the kitchenaid. The high end max 360 jet. Once I compared the third racks it was a no brainer for us. Much more functional for our needs as it cleans more than utensils, while still providing a natural and secure spot for those pesky things like medicine cups that like to fall into the heating element. So far loving it. For a dishwasher of course. I can think of other things I'd rather put that money to! :p

Just got a costco membership so I can buy the Bosch 800. The Bosch is on sale at all the major retailers, but Costco is the only one that would do delivery, install and haul away for free. That was about $300 everywhere else, so take away the $65 membership and I am $235 cheaper than anywhere else, and I have 364 more days of Costco.

we got a kitchenaid from costco about 7-8 months ago and it's been rock solid, very quiet and does a great job.

The post above me is right....Costco is the way to go

Same here...high end (804?) Kitchenaid from Costco installed today. We were way overdue as the door had been broken/wonky for a few years. Replaced a mid-range model Kitchenaid. I would have liked to consider the Bosch 800 but we were locked in on Kitchenaid to match the refrigerator and ovens.

I'm surprised that the newer high-end model seems to be louder than what it replaced. That was with a mostly empty load though.
