Memorial Day Drainage Project

Howdy All!

I started a project and now I'm not sure how to proceed.

The pool overflow just drains to a small patch of grass near the pump. The patio has a long narrow drain (~1.5 inch by ~3 inch) that also drains to this area. A good rain or splashy pool session turns this small patch of grass into a swamp.

I'd like to not have that swamp.

There is a 4 inch drainage pipe clean out sticking up in that grassy area that drains to the street. That 4 inch pipe starts there, goes through the front yard, and empties into the street.

A black perforated drain pipe comes out from under the concrete and connects to the drain pipe. I don't know where that black pipe comes from nor what it drains.

To add to the party, there is a gas line that goes under the perforated pipe connection to the drain pipe and a coax cable that goes over it.

Pictures of the mess are here.

Here are my questions:
  • How should I connect the pool overflow and patio drains to the 4 inch drain pipe?
  • How do I connect to the exit of the patio drain?

Bonus:
  • The gas line looks very deteriorated at the ground line. Is this something to be worried about? I don't believe the line is in use as there is a valve at the other end of the gas pipe that is closed.

Thanks, yet again, for y'all's advice and insight!

I would just get a 12x12" drain box and install it in that location and let trench drain dump into it. You might have to plumb pool overflow into the box. Would need a hole,
saw for that

There is a lot going on there!!

If I understand, you want to find a solution for the patio drain (channel drain) and the pool overflow?

Was there more to the system for these two drains or did they both terminate as shown?

Looks like the channel drain is missing the connector that transitions from as pictured to standard size pvc outlet. If that is the case, and it looks like you don't have a lot of room to work there and the installer didn't do you any favor here.

Ideally I would want everything to tie into that 4" main line and out to street. Given the tight space and all the transition work you would need to do to size up to 4" I would suggest a dry well. Especially since your volume is probably low and intermittent. However, if you ever foresee an issue where that overflow will need to move a lot of volume then you would need to get into the 4" line then.

Yep. I'd like to send the water coming from the pool overflow and patio channel drain somewhere else, preferably the street.

Both terminate just as is shown in the images. There are no other outlets for them.

The transition piece is gone if it ever was present. If you have a link of where to get one, please send it my way.

A whole host of installers were all out of favors for a bunch of things at this house. I'm just trying to unwind the mess or figure out a way around it. You can see how things are layered on top of one another in this one spot. Somewhere below these lines are the water and light lines for the pool, just to add to the chaos.

In the year I've been in this house, there's been several very heavy rainstorms that completely flooded the side yard with water from these two drains. Getting the water into that 4 inch drain would be a good option.

If it were me I would want to run that into existing pipe and too street as well.

It's complicated by everything going on there. I see a couple of options.

That channel/slot drain will be most problematic and probably why the installers didn't terminate correctly. Solve this first. It may be hard to find oem parts if you can't get a brand name. You should google and see if you can find correct parts, prepare for needle in haystack situation. If you get the part you will still need to figure out how it will enter the 4" system. Solving channel will guide next steps. If you solution here is getting channel matted to standard PVC, great, then get a double wye and route both drains to existing 4" pipe just behind the corrugated connection. For the wye you don't have to have the sides 4" size as close to what you need and use reducers as needed to mate up. Looks like you have drop in both drains, so you can make it happen. I don't know if this is proper use for a wye, but that's what I would use.

Option 2, you can't find matting parts for channel. I would install a catch basin just behind the corrugated. Technically, you are not supposed to have them in-line and drain water pass through, but you have constraints. If you can get basin low enough I would try and extent overflow pipe so it terminates on top of basin. Slope from channel drain to basin and consider rock or other material to direct water to basin.

Try not to disturb corrugated to much. (You need to figure out what this goes to at some point). You can get a two handled wire to specifically snake under 4" pvc and cut it out.

Option 1

Option2 w/ basin

Thanks for the detailed reply!

I'll start with solving the channel drain first!
